    1996 Katana 600 engine swapped in 1985 GS550E Chassis

Hey guys I have a 1985 gs550e Chassis with out the engine, but I have a 1996 katana engine with harness and all other goodies. I was just wondering if anyone has successfully put one of these 600 engines in a gs550e? Or would I be better off sourcing another gs550e engine? This bike is air/oil cooled like the katana. I made some quick measurements and it looks like it may fit. The only obstacle I see is the height, it looks like it may be a couple inches taller due to the oil pan.

Enough rambling, has anyone done this swap or seen it done?

I have a 1985 GS550ES that is probably one of the best riding/smoothest bikes I have ridden.

Did you search the archives yet? If not, that's the first step.

That said, I don't recall anyone doing that. There have been transplants of the larger air/oil engines into GS frames, though.

I did do search and I didn't see any engine swaps using a katana 600 engine. like you said there was some 750 engine swaps in the older style frames, but I did not see any for the 1985 550E Frame. I guess I wont know until I try. I will see about dry fitting the engine and go from there.

Curtie, have a look at this thread in ADVRider.
750 engine but there should be a lot of similarities.

I picked up a 1980 GS550E for $100. Set about getting a title and making it legal and started ordering a few parts for the rebuild. I learned about...

Its a tight fit due to the frame spine being quite close to the head.
I could measure my frame and engine I suppose.
