I'm So glad no one tried to start this with ether back in the day. Absolutely Pristine under the cover and dry as a bone just an oil film on everything.

Hate to take it apart but I've got nothing better to do. Head needs to come off.

Back in '79, I bought a leftover '78, brand new. It was red just like this one, I think the other color was blue..Loved that bike for 2 years, then traded up for an 11E, Loved that bike even more, but I sometimes wish I still had the 750. Ah, well, those were the days, my friend. We thought they;d never end.

(edit)On second thought, my bike was a darker red, and the gas cap cover was unpainted plastic: black. I wonder if Bobby's bike has been repainted?

Cylinder has to come off to hone and check rings. I did do a little clean up before the pic. Wish I knew how to point my pics.

All 4 carbs were junk and these are what I ended up getting from a member here. Looks like someone drained the fuel from the carbs many years ago. All jets saved and other than gaskets and
O-rings, all was perfect inside. The #3 vacuum nipple was missing but I have my donor set of carbs on hand, easy fix.

This is after about 8 hours of tender love and care. No sandpaper, Dremel, files or any kind of dipping or blasting just good ol Elbow grease, scotchbrite wd-40 and Blue Magic Metal Polish.
Fuel rails were a must to replace as well as the choke lifter bushings. They fell apart in my hands during the disassembly process. Note to self: 46 year old rubber and plastic should All be replaced.

Closeup shows how pristine the carb bodies are. The insides looked as nice.

Just a heads up..... Some members report fuel starvation issues using inline gas filters and you'll need to re-jet the carbs to account for the pods increased airflow. The stock pilot may be OK but the mains will need jacking up to 115 or more. There are many posts regarding re-jetting for pods - good luck!

Zed's "air correction jets" are the shortcut to clean running with pods.

Ed and Zed, I'm curious... can the air corrector jets mod be reversed?

What's a good way to clean the fins on the motor and the covers on the motor? I'm doing a similar restore on my dad's 77' GS750 and the motor looks like yours

Elbow grease and lots of time. I used paint stripper/ scotch brite pads/ lacquer thinner/pressure wash and long Qtip swabs. I chose to paint the cylinder and head with high heat Aluminum and semi gloss black. Masking was done using high heat powder coating tape and a couple hours of trimming with an exacto knife and many blades. I also chose to polish the valve cover which only takes 4 to 6 HOURS!!

I painted the cylinder black just because and I think that it turned out looking as I'd hoped.

This is what the painted head with polished valve cover looks like now.
