Another project. Unplanned Skunk.
Brought this home tonite. I was looking for just a frame with registration for my 79 1000 and this fellow contacted me and I bought this one instead. It's along pretty well at this point and some of the dirty work is done. I wanted to build a slightly modded bike this time and it already has the aluminum wheels and dual discs added. Exhaust will clean up well I think but I kind of have my heart set on a pipe this time, along with a few other period mods. I'll post better photos in a few days. Or maybe not. I deleted my last post because the photo commited sideways. So then I flipped the photo, reposted and the same result. Maybe I'll use my Canon next and see if works better than the phone. Yes the stupid looking bars are going in the garbage. It will be black when I paint it although I wouldn't mind the blue either. skunk.jpgLast edited by Big Block; 09-02-2025, 12:12 AM.1986 1150EF

Solid find. Already having the aluminum wheels and dual discs saves you a ton of time and hassle. Cleaning up that exhaust might work, but a period-correct pipe would really set it off.
Totally agree on ditching those bars. Black will look clean, but that blue has some charm too. Either way, it's a great starting point. Looking forward to the updates once you get the camera sorted.

Oh: They probably are clubman bars. I haven't pitched them yet but they'll probably be the first to go. Hopefully do an update tomorrow but might be doing an all day ride instead; The fellow was pretty meticulous and the frame is powdercoated, all fasteners cleaned and coated etc. Still some cleaning to do and then do the bodywork and paint on it. But pretty excited to get going on it.
I found a stainless 4 into 1 and Supertrapp muffler off an FJ1200, I might take a chance on it as it would be way different and really cool if I can mod it lightly to fit.1986 1150EF

Ok: I took a couple photos with my 5D Canon. I'll see if I can shrink them to use. IMG_6022.jpg1986 1150EF

That seems to be working. I am halfway through mocking it up to see what is missing before I start the polish and paint process. Got a message into Salty to get some brackets for Concours calipers in the front, I just went through sourcing rebuild parts for the original Zuke calipers and I don't feel like dealing with obsolete parts again I also already have a 650 Ninja front master so there's that. Stock exhaust is really nice so I'm going to use it for now. Something I can update later for fun. Seat is recovered with a repro skin so there isn't too much to do really. Im going to have to either buy a new front fender and signals stalks or have these ones rechromed and I don't think rechroming will be an economic option. Just say'in I've used several K&S Technologies repro turn signals, but not the model you need, and have been real happy with the ones I've used. Only difference I've seen were different color wires from OEM... Dang, prices have gone up, just looked at ebay and they're nearly $50, thinking the last ones I bought a few yrs. back were in the $25 to $30 dollar range... Wondering about the gas tank situation?1983 GS1100E, 1983 CB1100F, 1991 GSX1100G, 1996 Kaw. ZL600 Eliminator, 1999 Bandit 1200S, 2005 Bandit 1200S, 2000 Kaw. ZRX 1100

Tank is decent. It's got a bit of putty in the front corners and has been lined. It doesn't leak so I'm going to go with that. Yes I am thinking I wouldn't mind a smaller signal light on it, so I'll have a look and see if I can find something I like. Price and shipping on everything is out of control these days, I'll probably only do about 1 more bike I think. This one came at a good price with most of the work I'm not crazy about already done so I threw in on it. Getting more excited the more I do on it of course.1986 1150EF

Suzukis don't bring the $$$ they should so when the expected $150 stripe kit shot up to $300CDN I hit the wall and decided to cut my own. I'd sooner spend that cash on new brake rotors rather than vinyl decals. I have a plan on how to do the E- stripes along the bottom but I am not sure I'm going to do them yet. This took a few hours, now it's time to go for a ride to decompress. Bike is almost together, just waiting for a few bits, hook up the electrical harness etc. I may take a photo later today if I think of it with the good camera. skunk stripes.jpg1986 1150EF

Is it a fluted tank? If so id definitely go for a true skunk with white stripe. If contacted Diablo many times when wanting just a particular stripe and they will make it for you .As for the gold stripes. If the clear is good over them remove the blue stripe and shoot a few coats just over them. Then get cheap pinstripe and go over the existing pinstripes to preserve them while sanding the rest of the tank.
I wouldnt go to bare metal as a good solid sanding will provide a good bonding surface. Do any needed body filler and shoot the black.Last edited by chuck hahn; Yesterday, 05:48 PM.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Yes: I'm going to paint it black. It's an indented tank but has about 5 or 6 other dents as well! I contacted Diablo but it didn't go well hence my cutting the white inserts myself and picking up the dual pinstripe tape. I'll get the bodywork going this week I think, as I'm running out of mechanical to do until some parts show up. Dang, I tried 5 more photos using the phone but they commited sideways again, maybe I'll try the Canon again tomorrow.1986 1150EF
