Hello folks. I wanted to start the thread on my sorta restoration of my dad's old 82 gs1100ez. He's the only owner and purchased it brand spankin new in 83. Unfortunately, he started having some electrical problems in the late 90's and we already had 2 vehicles so there was no real need for the bike so it was parked in the shed.

Well, 13 years later, I finally decide to look into getting a bike and after much searching I decided to breath life back into her. I haven't done much of anything yet but I have already ordered some parts to get her back on the road. I am still in need of some parts, caliper rebuild kits, chain, alternator stator and other misc hoses and such but she will be road ready in May.

Riding w/ my dad has been more of a dream to me since I was a kid as I remember being a passenger on this bike back in the day and it just has so much meaning to me. My dad didn't ever think he would ride it again so he never drained any of the fluids while it sat. Well, he picked up a new '07 Bandit 1250s back in 07 and my mom recently got an '06 buleavard (bad spelling I know lol ) so I will get to ride w/ both of them soon.

I've already gone through and passed the motorcycle certification testing so now I just need to get the bike running. I'll try to load pics asap to show before and after results.

A little update on the bike. I have received just about everything for the bike so yesterday I began working on the bike. So far my dad and I have replaced the starter button assembly, installed a newer cdi ignitor, replaced both tires and tubes and put on a new chain. This week/weekend will begin the rebuilding of the brake calipers and master cylinders. Also, I should get a "ready to go" fuel tank so we can give the engine a try.

Sounds like you & your Dad are having some nice times again with that bike...

I would strongly recommend you completely disassemble & clean the carbs (dip), and replace all the 30 year old o-rings. Otherwise, carb issues will mask other symptoms you may have with getting that bike back to its original glory...

I do plan on doing a full carb rebuild soon but the main thing would be getting the engine to start and stay on. I know at first it's gonna be running like a kid w/ asthma and major allergies but there's still a few more things I need to buy before it's road ready so I'll get that all at the same time. I should be getting a decent bonus from work next month so hopefully that will be enough for me to buy the steel braided brake lines I want and the carb rebuild kits.

You don't need carb rebuild kits, just the orings and some Berrymans to dip the carbs in. Follow the tutorial listed and you'll be fine. Once you get it running make sure to check the electrics with the Stator Papers. It would be a good idea to go through every electrical connector and either clean it or replace them with new spade type connectors.

thanks for the heads up . I will be doing a very thorough scan of as much of the electrical lines as I can and make sure to clean/replace any damaged or corroded wires. I'll also be going through to each ground and connector I can w/ my dremmel to ensure a clean contact.

The reason most of the electrical system fail is due to corroded connectors causing resistance in the circuits. So, it's a great idea to clean them. Also, take some time, read and learn as much as you can here. There's years and years of info and I think just about every question has been answered at some point. You may have already been doing this and, if so, good for you.

Update:

I came into 2 hiccups yesterday. The battery will no longer hold a charge and the rear tire went flat...I just put on a new tire and tube this past sunday. It wouldn't be so bad BUT, when I was removing the rear axle I slightly stripped it! /cry

So, now that I have a stripped rear axle bolt and nut and a tire that didn't hold air I'm gonna have to buy a newer axle. None too happy about this but oh well. I will still have this beast on the road next month.

I'm ahead of you mike, already got in touch w/ someone to has one that I will be buying. Ok, no I just need to get the battery replaced and possibly a new rear tube.

UPDATE:

Picked up my newer gas tank this morning and my dad and I may have come into a little luck. On craigslist, a guy posted an 82 gs1100G for $400 not running. It's pretty much complete and the guy just didn't want to put in the time/money to get it running again as it was sitting since '99. It had been covered AND in his garage the whole time. My dad is going to the guys house today to check it out and hopefully we will have a great parts bike to take off what we can use and part out the rest. I will keep you guys in the loop as to if I get it and what parts will be for sale.
