I'm going to look at finishing the painting, i'm not a fan of the gloss black so may move onto a metallic paint instead. I've got a spray gun and a compressor all i need is the paint and the thinners!

Ok i've cut the manifolds from 5mm steel plate, need to make the metal tubes and cut the holes in the 5mm steel plate to finish them, i'm not sure how i will seal the manifolds against the engine itself. I'm thinking a flat piece of rubber?

Maybe try some neoprene, it's supposed to hold up better than rubber under tough conditions.Originally posted by Woodsy View PostOk i've cut the manifolds from 5mm steel plate, need to make the metal tubes and cut the holes in the 5mm steel plate to finish them, i'm not sure how i will seal the manifolds against the engine itself. I was actually trying to hint to make sure you've got everything before you start. I wasn't quite as organised as I could have been and had to duck up to Supercheap most days to pick up something... very frustrating!1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Well i made the inlet manifolds PICS TO COME they arnt the best but they seal and are on the bike now, still not happy with it as its not 100%. They will do for now but i am going to stop fart arsing around and just buy the parts i need from the UK or USA which will be both inlet rubbers and both outlet rubbers with clamps and springs i should of done it in the first place but money wouldnt allow it.

Probably shouldnt of taken the bike out today for a run, i've had the flu and had to come home and rip the jacket off because i was cooking in all my gear.

began wet sanding today on the lh side panel and rubbed through to primer, really annoys me considering i put heaps of paint and heaps of clear on it so i could avoid rubbing through!

Tail section now has some filler on it waiting for that to dry then i'll sand it up and get it ready for some paint, dont know what i'm doing wrong with the painting, yes i'm only using spray cans but its automotive paint, its getting 5-6 coats and about 4 coats of clear over the top. I'm wet sanding with 1200 then step up to 2000 grit.

What am i doing wrong? Should i give the cans a miss and do the rest of the bike with a gun and will it make any difference to wet sanding?

I've considered painting it another colour instead of black to help hide any imperfections in my first paint job!Last edited by Guest; 10-25-2011, 09:32 PM.

Bugger, yeah, I know what that's like... although at least on my tail piece it was just a tiny corner...Originally posted by Woodsy View Postbegan wet sanding today on the lh side panel and rubbed through to primer, really annoys me considering i put heaps of paint and heaps of clear on it so i could avoid rubbing through!

I'd suspect your coats aren't thick enough and/or you haven't got enough clear coats on...

I've ended up with 7 coats on mine but I'm still paranoid about doing this wet sand and polish and cutting through to the paint or primer...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Got some pics for you, dont look too hard at my inlet manifolds as they will be replaced soon.

Side panel was wet sanded and polished and came up pretty good still not the best but its got a good shine to it.

The tail section has some paint on it now and some clear, i forgot to put the white line down the middle so i will do that next and they put afew more coats of clear over the top. That will be the end of all my spray paint so the tank will be painted with the gun.

Next after the tank will be the wheels, they will be black with the alloy ring around the outside, then will come the engine and frame.

Now that the bike is slowly taking shape i'm getting more excited about it!
