Here is a picture of the dash. There is no inner fairing, it just fits around the dash and a rubber moulding covers where they meet.
I saw a dash go for $600 on Ebay.

Funny how something like that can matter when it comes to price, if that is truly the only difference.
Was it a case of the first few off the line got the 9k?Comment

Pass if it had anything to do with the final price - these things are just getting more and more sought after all the time.
And that's a good question about why the 9k rpm tacho. I don't know how some ended up with them. My 9k one is on a later bike than the 8500 one (higher frame number) and I very much doubt that either has been changed from original. And that tacho is unique to the S - it is strange.79 GS1000S

Just gotta say, vmass..that S looks fantastic. You should be very proud. I remember you telling me that you'd be hard-pressed to get the rest of the bike as nice as the paint..believe me..you done good. LOVE the pipe.

Sporting a new:
1) R/R
2) Stator
3) Stator Cover
4) Stator Emblem
I need to pull the center stand and clean that up. And that will be it for a while, tomorrow I am picking up an old Honda to tinker with.
Thanks again for all the help, It has been a great learning experience and a lot of fun.

So, you ARE able to keep the center stand with the Yoshi exhaust... Cool. And very nice work on this resto, Vmass. Sure the Honda project will be fun, too.
Speaking of center stands, does your '80 S have the 'curved-leg' version? Guess the factory switched to allow for megaphone-type exhaust clearance

1. I have a couple Hondas, what did you pick up?
2. How about some more details/pics on the S in the elevator adventure.2@ \'78 GS1000Comment

Thanks Frank... I haven't noticed a curve in the center stand. I will take a better look when I pull it off.So, you ARE able to keep the center stand with the Yoshi exhaust... Cool. And very nice work on this resto, Vmass. Sure the Honda project will be fun, too.

It worked without interference with both the Vance and Yosh.Comment

1) I am picking up a 1974 Honda 450K. 8k miles and sitting for the past 14 years in a garage. Current owner bought the bike in 1975 with 1.2k on it. Looks all original and very dirty.
I don't know much about these old Hondas but thought I would give it a go.
2) Due to pending legal actions by local, state and federal officials, I have been advised to refrain from any other discussions in regard to the S in the elevator.

The S looks great. Like a lot of guys here, I've wanted one since I saw them in the bike mags when they were new. Coincidently, I sold this '73 CL450 to finance my GS. They're great bikes. I've got a '74 basket case now. Another funny thing is that the '74 came with a paint job that closely matches your Cooley!1) I am picking up a 1974 Honda 450K. 8k miles and sitting for the past 14 years in a garage. The '74 wasn't nearly as nice!
