        Yep, you read it right, that's a 1.00mm thickness gauge under that steel. Not one of them was within spec (.004/.10mm)

          This "rebuild" is starting to sound like a post-mortem. Nothing buckets of money can't fix though.

            Ed, In for a dime, in for a dollar...

            I look at it this way, I paid $125 for the bike and for that I got a frame, a title and a factory shop manual. All the rest has been a whole bunch of careful shopping and good luck at times in what I've been given or found to help reduce the cost of restoration. Sure it's been frustrating at times, but more often than not, it's been fairly easy and very therapeutic.

            Plus, I hope it gives someone a bit of insight on how to properly approach a full restoration, with emphasis paid on the small details.

            I really do enjoy it...

              I agree 100%. But the little darlings can sure gnaw a large hole in the bank account very quickly, can't they. If not for the love of the work involved, no one would ever rebuild one - for profit anyway.

              Oh - and she's looking terrific - great job.

                She's definitely put a hit on the pocket book.

                In my case the outlay of funds have been spread out over long period of time and that's helped ease the pain a bit. If I had to do something like this today, only one year later than when I started this, I don't think I could even come close to what I have into it now. Prices have gone through the roof lately and are getting harder to find. I bought my fuel tank that needed a bit of work for the princely some of $88 dollars plus shipping. Try finding one for that amount today.

                Still all things considered, I'll have less into it than some of the restorations I've seen done right here on this board. For that I'm happy and thankful for things others have given towards Penelope's restoration, both in time looking for things they know I've needed and just plain out and outright gifts. You can't put a price on that and it's one more reason I really enjoy working on Her.

                I'll look back one day and smile each time I look at something and think to myself, Chuck, or Ed, or Steve, or Greg, or so and so gave me that...

                        Picked up some paint stripper over the weekend to use on the Skunks fuel tank. Decided to try it on the left hand control while I'm waiting for my wife to remember to bring a half pint of flat black urethane to mix with the black gloss and get back to painting.

                        Time for a reminder I suppose



                        Going to try Chuck's method of applying the white paint to the letters after she's painted all nice and pretty.
