Man gettin' those carbs in looks like a royal PITA!!! And here I was avoiding mine because I thought the 450 was too difficult (and it doesn't suit what I want)...

You didn't have to, the picture did.
unless there's a difference in the spring's rates, I don't understand the need to use the 'L' springs in place of the stock ones. with the exception of the length of travel before coil bind, a PVC spacer used with the stock springs would work just as well.Comment

Good point Greg. All the activity died off in my rebuild thread lately (not that I have a lot to post right now) but my views have steadily increased... over 18800 now

Again, ENTIRELY TOO MUCH TIME AND EFFORT to get the boots from the air-box to cooperate!
I had to pull the carbs, pull the air-box and remove the no longer available boots.
Between 3 sets of boots from 3 air-boxes,
I got the best set and boiled the darn things to get them anywhere near soft and cooperative.
What a complete PITA!!!
I ended up mounting the carbs to the intakes and then mounting the boots to the carbs, then tilting the engine back into the air-box.
Did I mention that all of this is a complete PITA???
Sanded on the turd of a fuel tank and got a little more of the dents/scratches blended.

Almost together after all of the HOURS of effort.
Did I forget to mention this is a PITA???

Even the stock air filter housing did not want to cooperate!
But, one of them had a K & N filter in it.

I'll probable polish some more turds tomorrow and paint them again.
Might even get the exhaust back on and finish with the engine mounts.

After working on the Panhead for most of the day,
I got to spend a little time on the beast.
Bolted up the exhaust almost. It still needs the collector clamps installed.
Discovered that I MUST have disconnected the exciter wire to the solenoid when I installed the air-box yesterday.
The start button has power and it worked last month.
Apparently I didn't get the video of it running after warming it up a bit so here is the initial start up where the choke did not cooperate. (you can see it drop just before the engine dies.)
There won't be any mosquitoes around for a while as the ATF and penetrating oil was the first thing to burn.
It did clear out and only has a slight miss that might be attributed to timing and valve adjustment.
As it hasn't ran in over ten years, I am happy with the results so far.
The guy that I got it from said that the oil pan leaked so he included a new pan and drain plug.
I ran it with whatever was in the crankcase.
I need to see if this might be the reason for the pan leaking...

. What if that oil is also 10 years old? Better change it!

The oil pan will be removed and the screen cleaned.
I have several other spare oil pans so if this one is ruined,
I will replace it with one that actually has a drain plug at least.
Then, I will ride it to a car wash and see where it needs more attention to any leaks.
I used up my tach drive seals on the last two projects so that will have to wait for now.
I can't seem to find my old 750E (dead speedo) gauges to at least get a tach on it yet.
The chain is rusty and I have been soaking it with chain lube for the past month.
It might still be usable for a while anyway.
