I was hoping to get a complete rebuild kit with jets and things like that. I thought that someone might know of kits that come with washers, jets, etc.

Typically the kits are junk... you should find the float bowl gaskets still available from Suzuki, cycleorings.com may have suitable O rings, and unless there's something wrong with your jets then they just need a good soak in carb dip with the carbs...Originally posted by hjacobmiller View PostI was hoping to get a complete rebuild kit with jets and things like that. I did not replace any parts in the carbs. I cleaned them out as best I could. I think a monkey devices the carbs last time because the adjustment screws were out 3 turns.... I reassembled everything and set the adjustment screws to 1.5 turns out. Most of the time unless you tear a gasket or the gaskets are just in bad shape there isn't really a need to replace everything. It is just throwing money at a problem that might not be the solution.Originally posted by hjacobmiller View PostI was hoping to get a complete rebuild kit with jets and things like that. The plugs in the carbs is a good sign it means they are still factory set. Use a drill bit to get them out. They are aluminum so don't press and use a slow speed. They should pop right out. The adjustment screw is under the plug.

Make sure you have a screwdriver that fits correctly and spray it with penetrating oil. Take your time.... breaking a parts in the Carb would be a disaster.

An update... I have put about 1060 miles on her so far. The fiberglass packing that came in the emgo mufflers is no more....it all either burnt or rotted away. I'm pretty sure the packing that came with them isn't great quality and there wasn't much of it. I'm going to try repacking the mufflers if it isn't going to quiet it down enough I may be looking for other options.

I can't stand the noise level. Suggestions are welcome.

I am averaging 55-59 mpg I would like to improve it to over 60mpg. So far I have reduced weight but taking off the luggage rack and cleaning out pockets, backpack and tank bag and have done the typical things like tire pressure and tune up.
I think a big killer of MPG is the highway riding...Early testing revealed 100% throttle = 80MPH top speed, typical highway speeds are 65-70MPH...which I assume means I'm heavy on the throttle to get to those speeds. If that is just the nature of the beast I can accept that but if anyone has other suggestions for improving MPG I would welcome them.

Glad to hear she's running well!

One thing though is that losing the packing in the mufflers will probably make it breathe a little easier.. and therefore she might be running lean. I'd suggest repacking ASAP so you don't hole a piston or something drastic.

As far as MPG goes, yes, you'll need to find the "sweet spot" where she's most economical, probably around 5 - 6K RPM's is my guess, and whatever speed that puts you at is probably the most economical cruising speed.

Gearing can affect that too... oh, and wind resistance rather than weight at speed will have a bigger affect.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Well tonight I did repack the mufflers and it made all the difference! I've been keeping an eye on spark plugs to make sure there isn't signs of running lean. I'm still using the stock air box and filter also. Last time I checked the plugs they were a tan color.

I also installed one of these.... maier windshield. Interestingly enough that netted me about 3 more MPH on the shake down run today. I didn't install it for top speed though... its so I can ride more....heh...

Good stuff, glad to hear it

Yes, that screen should definitely make a difference.

I made my little fly screen to get some buffetting off me at speed and it works really well. I find though that I had to tilt it to be more vertical as it was original streaming the wind directly onto my chest which made it worse.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

I think I have a carb issue again... All of a sudden she is cold blooded and runs like s*** bogging, hesitating, popping...FML... I took the plugs to a trusted friend and he said they look okay. "Clean em up and put them back in." The plugs have just over 1000 miles on them. Since I know a monkey worked on them before I'm going to go ahead and replace a few things like the jets... Usually a soak and compressed air cleans the jets but monkeys tend to stick metal objects in there to poke out crud.

A side note... the low beam on the headlight burnt out. I bought a replacement which promptly blew out the low beam then the high beam when I switched to it. I put the old light back in and am using the high beam... WTF... I'm going back to the store to exchange it. I may pick up a battery also since I have no idea what condition it's in and don't know the age... it seems like all this s*** just started to happen...both the running issue and headlight could be related... maybe.
