First ill start by saying hello all and thanks for all the great info yu have provided so far. Im

new to the forum and new to the bike. A few months back got the itch to start a cafe bike

project of some sort. Originally I was in the hunt for a cb750 but those damn things are

pricey! After research and many hours of craigslist and ebay i finally found what i was

looking for..... A 1977 Gs750...... it was love at first sight. Called the owner he told me it was

the last of a string of bikes he had been using to make bobbers, not my style but cool non

The less! Owner was asking $500 we settled at $400.00 w/ extra carbs and all fairings. My

jouney begins with a near complete teardown and inspection. I would call myself a novice at

this but withthe help ofClymer and this forum im confident i will have the bike im looking

for... my plan is reasonable, streamline, shave weight, and lastly gain that great cafe style

look and still keep room for 2. I do have one question for now and i apologize im sure it has

been asked.......how can you tell what model of 750 it is? (Such as L model Tz exc.) A few

pictures to peak interest. Pictures are of bike as is after purchase and day 1 of the

breakdown.

There should be a label on the steering neck that has the complete model designstion and the date of manufacture.

You have a 78 or 79 GS750. It is the base model. An "E" model would have alloy wheels and dual front discs. A "T" model would be a more "standard" style with higher bars and a traditional chrome fender and tail light. The "L" model was a cruiser style bike with buckhorn bars, extended forks and a 16" rear wheel. An example of the full designation would be GS750EN for a 78 "E" model. The standard would be just GS750N

Could be a '77, there are only a few differences between a '77 and a '78,
such as the ignition switch and a few carburetor pieces. Show us a picture of that switch.
Either way it is a basic GS 750, no E or anything.

Nice bike, if you can lose that hideous seat!

Thank you very much for the grand welcome.....alot of forums you find people just wanna

jump down your back about everything and this site seems to be a far shot from

that....Basscliff the info looks great i have been absorbing everything i can about these

bikes. Im really excited to get this thing on the road but plan on taking my time and doing

it right. All this info wll make that an easier task. Planning on tackling the carbs tomorrow

2-1 on both sides. Dont think its aftermarket. Ill check it out and let u know

definetly not stock for a 77 b model, looks mebbe like an L exhaust.

You need to be careful here. It appears this machine has been messed with pretty good and you cannot take anything for granted. Looks like it's a '77 or early '78 but it's got bits from elsewhere. You'll have to decipher as you go!

Where's the airbox?

I will definetly do that allojohn...i think the guy i bought it from was building drag bikes and bobbers so this may be all the remaining pieces. Thats okay with me it makes it that much sweeter in the end because it will be all my hard work and design.

Picked up the new headlight today converting to halogen, im sure some will not like but i

want people to see me coming. Also picked up four pods not sure if im gonna go with

those or find an original airbox...........starter, starter cover and a great chrome front

fender compliments of ebay. Pictures soon
