GS750 1978 Cafe 'Project Doris'

Hi,

Greetings from Windsor, UK.

Been following this site for a while now, getting useful information and inspiration for my GS750 project. She's a '78 GS750, which I plan to rebuild as a cafe; for Sunday morning blasts and the odd run up the strip.

Work planned is as follows:

1) Engine rebore to 844cc, Dyna 2000 ignition system, rejet, pods, V&H system
2) Hagon wheels and suspension
3) Racing battery and electrics relocated
4) Loads of polishing, stainless etc

Me and my dad are completing the bulk of the work, and have already made some progress re-fabricating the rear end (seat brackets, battery box and tail light mounts).

For those who are interested, this is the last project we built together (completely non-Suzuki related!!) I'm looking to achieve the same level of finish here.

I hope you have access to a scale, it will be interesting to know the weight savings.
I like spokes but have only heard of Hagon shocks.

Always nice to see a father-son project, I sure wish I had my Dads help on mine.
Is the photo with the steel toed boots and Machinist apron your Dad?
Mine had a way of walking into the shot just as I'm taking the photo.

I did think about weighing each item as I removed / replaced them, although I didn't want to get carried away! I would however be interested in taking the bike to a weigh bridge once complete to compare the weight to a stock bike.

Haha, yes that's dad, he's proper old school when it comes to working in the garage. He's a great engineer though, such a perfectionist. Hopefully this wont be the last project we work on together, but I wanted something which we built that I could hold onto; the GS is a classic and something I can see me owning for many years to come.

A little bit of work on the engine block this weekend. The first pic was taken a few weeks ago when I started to clean the muck and dirt off the block, 33 years of road grime!!!!

Once it was cleaned and all non-essential parts were removed we pulled the sump off to clean the pick up strainer, surprisingly it was in good shape. I hear they can get clogged up on these engines.

2 coats of gloss black engine lacquer later (applied by good ol' dad!) and the results are fantastic! The pics really don't do the finished article justice

My cylinder barrels are back from the engineers, rebored to take the WISECO pistons and have been sent to www.icmhome.org.uk for vapour blasting along with the head, cam cover and carb bodies. I'm expecting good results, more pics to come.......

Cheers Danny, I'm doing the block black, the barrels and head will be raw aluminium (nice and clean).

looking great, can't wait for the next installment...what paint have you guys used for the engine?...I'm planning on painting the engine in mine some time this year
