Grab a triple tree off an older model gs1000. The diameters of the forks are the same, and they have bar risers.
I know I'm reviving a dead thread, but I found it in a search about a week ago and failed my mission by half-assedly following this advice. I only bought the upper portion of the tree (the ad claimed it to be a 79 if that's relevant) and after it arrived, found the fork spacing was a centimeter more narrow (18.5 vs 19.5) than stock on an 83 750ES. Does anyone know if buying a complete tree would change the upper fork width safely? Did I buy too early or late a year of 1000 triple tree? I'd hate to buy a whole one find out the hard way that it puts the forks in a bind because of the lower part being wider than the top, but I already have bars on the way, so I'm anxious to find a solution pretty quickly.

If nothing else, this post can be a caveat to anyone else thinking they can get away doing this cheaper by only getting the upper part of the tree.
