I'm bringing a parts-bike GS850 back to life because I hate having money.

Hello,
I've owned 5 GS850's now and have loved them all and I've decided to see about bringing my '79 parts bike back to life. After finding out why the engine only turned 3/4 of the way (shaft left in after someone removed rotor) I have the head and cylinders off.
The valves all look in good shape except one cracked exhaust valve. I didn't measure the clearances though before I took the head off so I don't have any info there. I was thinking about cutting the seats and putting new valves and oil-seals in and then reassembling. I don't know if lapping them and putting it all back together would be worth it. I've heard that's kind of a "good enough" way to go about it.

Should I have the block shaved .015 or .020 while I have it apart?
Where is a good place to order a set of valves?

You won't find any aftermarket valves for your bike so that means buying from a dealer source or used. Part Shark and Boulevard Suzuki are two forum favorites, or post on the Parts Wanted forum or check ebay. Suzuki GS engines are super durable, but they can only take so much abuse from things like neglected valve adjustments.

I'd pull all the valves and find a local shop to kiss them on a facing machine, including the stem. You can most likely get away with lapping them from there but take a close look at the seats and dress them as necessary. A Neeway cutter does a really nifty job cleaning up the seats if you can find access to them.

I was looking for an extra exhaust valve and figured they were hearty enough to be reground and then lapped to re-cut seats.
I'll go ahead and post in the parts-wanted section too.
My local junk yard has a gs750 engine and I haven't yet been able to find out if the valves were the same from that bike. If anyone knows it would save me tearing the head off and measuring. Or, if anyone could point me in the right direction to find that out I'd be very grateful.

This link is making me think all the listed 2-valve engines used the

The GS750 (2V version) and GS850 shared valves, but that said, don't believe anonyms people on the internet to furnish you with information like this, please use a proper OEM Suzuki dealership parts fishe to judge part compatibility for yourself. http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.htm
