My 1150 clean up/rebuild

The 1150, if I recall correctly, had one size larger mains on the two and three carb to keep those inner cylinders a little cooler. I dunno what the Dynojet (you might also investigate Factory Pro kits, some say they are actually better. I've never used them yet personally but plan to when I change the kit out on my ZRX cause I don't like the DJ needle design in that particular kit) kit has for mains for an 1150, but I ran a set of 1150 carbs on my 1100ES with the 1100 DJ kit in it and after playing with the needle clip position it ran absolutely awesome.
Usually the clip position is all you really have to mess with on the Dj kits in an otherwise stock motor. I'd pick up some washers the same size as the ones included in the kit (and I may have a few if you can't find any locally) as you may find that shimming the needle to a position inbetween two slots on the needle is where the sweet spot is.

I'm jealous man that is not only one of the three GSes I've not owned and want to (I am getting one of the three in the 81 1100E that is coming my way soon and the other would be a 78 1000E) but its also one of the coolest paint schemes on it I will be watching with interest and keep up the good work
And if no one has spoken up for the airbox lemme know what you'd like for it.

A bit here, a bit there, an hour tonight and another tomorrow, eventually you will get it done just ask my bud Gatekeeper. That 750 has got to be the gold standard in restorations and encourage you to follow that lead.

At times it may seem like you are not getting anywhere and there is always a tendency to rush but as the saying goes, "slow and steady wins the race".

You are off to fine start and its a bonus that you have an "assistant" to call on when you hit the odd "challenge" (there tend to be a few of them in every resto).

Hey Trevor.....nice build you got going there, I will follow with interest, seems your going to do a fine job....

slow and steady, and as everyone has said, any part you touch make it better, and in the end it will look fantastic.

I don't know about my build being the gold standard (Thanks spyug) but I am happy on how it's turning out so far, I have a little more to go and it will be complete.

so if you need some encouragement, have a peek at my build thread, and some of the others that have been done, there are many with great results....

Hey Cafekid, did you see the airbox that came with my bike? It's a fabricated aluminum one, not original. If you want it I would be happy to send it to you.

grind down the welds, give it a high polish, it just might not look all that bad.....

Just a tip. The bench mount wire wheel is the absolute best tool for resto work and when it comes time ( with a sisal wheel) for polishing. I've done 4 or 5 restos now and what I do is clean and bag the parts as I take them off. That way they are ready to paint or go back on when I need them.

Instead of throwing out plastic ziploc bags once used for food storage I wash them and pinch them for the man cave. A felt marker to label them and some milk crates to put things in and I don't misplace anything.

Organization (i'm sure you figured that out) is the key.

As GK says, that airbox would look good all smoothed out and buffed, why not keep it for awhile.

Hey thanks for the tips Spyug, I have been "pinching" yogart containers (big ones) for a while now but the zip locks is a great idea too, thanks. Organization is for sure the key. I spent some time cleaning up my garage and have give my boy and wife instructions to PLEASE not move anything.

You are right about the egg cartons, I have several at the ready.
Took my header and pipe to "You Blast It" today. Dropped it off and let them do it and picked it up after work. $50.00 well worth it!



Had to coach my boy's ball team tonight so tomorrow I will coat/paint the exhaust. If I can try and do at least one thing a weekday and more on the weekend I hope to have it ready to ride sometime in July.
