GSX750 Project

Okay i ditched my other thread as it was 40 pages full of nothing of any use. I'm going to keep my questions out of this thread to make it more enjoyable reading so you dont have to read my ramblings.

Bought this GSX750ESD in April 2012 with afew known issues. Cracked pick up housing running issues and a big vibration.

Plans are to remove the fairings and run it as a naked / street fighter style but still have it so it doesnt lose its identity as a Suzuki.

How it arrived.


As afew of you may know i played around the the bike for a while fixing things as they came up, which was 90% of the time. So i've now bit the bullet and stripped it to start again.


How it sits now.




The wiring looks like it is 2 harnesses joined into 1, so it will have to be fully rewired. I will be doing everything on the bike myself to keep costs to an absolute minimum. Front end and engine come out tomorrow so the frame can be wire wheeled back to metal and then i can start with the POR15 treatment, i did price up KBS products of the same design as i used them to line my tank but the Australian pricing was 4x the USA pricing!

I look forward to keeping this updated and hopefully get some tips along the way!

You don't need to get the frame back to bare metal for the POR 15, just key it with some 600 grit sandpaper and you'll be hot to trot.

cool thanks Pete, as you can see by the pics she has quite abit of surface rust so i'll get rid of all of that then i'm going to spray the por15 as i saw your opinion on brushing it lol

Hahah cool.

With the surface rust, after you've keyed it with the 600 grit, rinse it all down, squirt some Metal Ready all over it to convert and etch that surface rust, rinse it all down and dry it off, then it'll be an excellent base for the POR 15.

Good luck if you're going to brush... yeah it self levels *really* well but I found it tested my patience brushing into all the nooks and crannies... next time I'll have my shed/booth done and I'll be spraying I reckon!

Didnt quite get the engine out today but got everything else stripped out and tagged.

Think i found my leaning over problem.


Bearing surface on lower headstock bearing, it was a rippled surface so it had been wearing for a while but had no noticeable play in it.

Okay the engine is out, what an effort that was even with the frame laid down on its side! Looks like the frame is straight which is a big relief, pics to come tomorrow as i forgot my memory card.

Time now to clean everything up, paint and polish and put it back together with afew mods.

Okay Guys, i managed to get the paint for the frame during the week, Here is what i have gone with.



KBS Products, can be brushed on or sprayed on, i was going to brush it on but i'm abit torn now as spraying will get into everywhere.

Have had no time on the bike lately, been working my arse off and trying to settle this foot injury down, i have tomorrow off so will be starting to tear into the bike, Not sure if i should start the frame or if i start on the components first. Once this bike is done i can start on the Katana!

I've started to paint it with the KBS frame paint system, base coat is now 90% done, just have to wait till its dry flip it over and do the rest of it.

you asked earlier about starting on the frame or components, on the GS I did the frame first, this allows it to cure for the next little while, as your doing the rest of the parts, and when your ready to start bolting things on, you know it will be completely dry.....

I am going to do it the same way on my FZ rebuild, hopefully get to the frame this weekend, sand it down, prime and paint, and hang it up in the rafters to dry, while I work on the rest of the items...

Definitely agreed GK, definitely the most sensible way forward.

You've gotta have the frame done first otherwise you're setting yourself up for lots of waiting or chipped paint down the track.

Thanks for the reply GK. Yeah frame is the logical way to go its going to be interesting putting the engine into the frame though! I can see a few scratches and swear words already lol.
