Well I didn't get much done today on the 750. A pipe broke in the kitchen so that brought everything to a halt for a few hours. Thankfully I at least know what is broken, so I won't have any more water leaking until it is fixed. Down side is no laundry or dishwasher until it is fixed, hopefully Monday.

I managed to get the brake pedal removed from the old frame. It was on there good. It took a lot of penetrating oil, a 1x2, and a no blow mallet. The spindle will not budge so I got one coming off eBay at a good price. I also got another spedo drive, and brake spindle from eBay too.

I tore down the front caliper and think I might need a new one of those. I have the piston soaking in penetrating oil and hope that the caliper is salvageable. The piston is totally seazed up. I removed the boot and was not surprised to see it totally encrusted with crap. I used a pic to get as much out as I could. I will put the pliers to it in the morning and see if I can get it free.

The front brake m/c might be salvageable as well. Im going to have to probably take the screw extractors to the m/c lid. I put light pressure on my screwdriver and the screw heads both started to strip. I stopped as soon as I felt metal giving way. Those will get replaced with stainless allen heads if it can be rebuilt. It all depends on the sight glass. Can it be replaced?

It CAN be replaced, there is a thread on it here somewhere.
I read through it a long time ago, but right now I have no idea where it is.
I would suggest utilization of the search feature.

I kind of figured it could, but I got lazy after the sun went down and just wanted to throw the last post up before going to bed. I'll search for it. I've been doing a lot of that lately so as to not ask a bunch of redundant questions. Plus I keep BikeCliff's page open in another tab for quick reference.

The pics of when I brought it home don't do the nastiness justice! I probably should have passed on it, but I wanted something to fix up and learn on. I have another bike that runs and isn't an antique rust bucket so I'm not really in a hurry. Plus the wife doesn't give me grief because I told her she can have it when I'm done with it if she can handle it. But after all the work this is going to take I think I'll get her something smaller and newer and keep the GS.

I read the posts on replacing the sight glass. Seems pretty simple and straight forward.

So I got no work done on the bike today. This morning we had torrential downpours, and since I don't have a garage to work in, I was stuck in doors. Plus my wife and I both had the day off again so it was family day. My son is only 16 months old so he can't help me out yet either. But I did take a few pics from yesterday's little bit of work I got to do.



Here is the mess my brake caliper is. Will need to get that piston out some how.



You can see the screw starting to strip in this one. Need to take the impact driver to it and try to get them out that way. If not I have an extractor set that will work. Had to do the same thing for my xvs 1100 m/c.

Still not much progress

So not much has been done in the last couple of days. I had a pipe brake in my kitchen so I am still dealing with that. I had to cut up the cabinet and wall under my kitchen sink to get to the offending pipe before the plumber could actually work on it. That took up my day yesterday, and today I go back to work because my vacation is over.

I did buy a few more things off of eBay. I wish I would have held on to more of the original bike when I first got it and began tearing it apart. I need to really clean up more of what I have now and see where that gets me.

I still can't get the piston out of the front brake so that is my next step. And I still need to get the rear brake drum separated from the wheel hub. My next day off isn't unti next Monday but I work days very day but today until then so I should be able to get some work done at night if the weather holds up. I also need to find some space in the house to work on stuff so I don't have to leave it under the carport or crammed into my little shed attached to it. Don't know how the wife will like that though. But so far she is on board with the rebuild and she keeps me going on it. That helps a lot. I will keep updates and pics coming as I get work done.

I haven't paid too much attention to my second "T" lately...it's good to have a running first bike at the moment.

Well it's going to be a long haul for sure. I am going to focus on the frame, wheels, & suspension first. Once I am confident those items are solid then I will get to work on the engine. I am going to have to clean the crap out of it. Then all new gaskets, and paint. I have gathered a lot of knowledge from reading all the other rebuild threads so I feel like I can get it all done. Shooting to get it back on the road for next spring.

The frame is actually an 80 750e I believe so there is a little difference in the front motor mount, but not by much from what I can tell. The rear brake setup is a little different, but I believe I can get that to work as well. I'm trying not to keep a list of parts I need, instead just getting what I need when it comes up. That way I can not think about total cost. Denial is great sometimes.

Denial is great...as long as you're happy and can spare the money (wife's gotta be content as well).

My second "T" is waiting for me to tear her down. Right now, I've just been inspecting her inner parts and comparing it to my 1st "T". It's good reference so that I can put her back together when the time comes.

Take your time with her...she will be worth the wait. And it's cool if she's not a "T" because I dig 750s--I'm happy with the power delivery.

I got a couple more parts in the mail today! I'm getting ready to put them on and will take some pics. I also bought a gallon of simple green and a big bottle of Pinsol last night. I think I will try and clean up the engine while it is still in the crap frame since its nice and cradled and mobile since I have it on a caster.

After I got home from work though, I had some more pressing things to take car of...my pipe still isn't fixed. Plumber insisted I take out a cabinet and my countertop.

Got a little done.

I got a few little things accomplished tonight. A couple of days ago I found my rider pegs and test fit them. They are rusted pretty bad, but it is just surface rust. I need to get some vinegar and soak the rusted stuff I want to reuse. I also mounted up my new to me kickstand, and brake spindle. The kickstand bolt feels loose, and might need a new bolt or the frame mount tapped up a size. Not sure yet. I have '80 rear peg mount plates coming so once I get those and the new oem hardware for the swingarm the rear end will be close to functional.
