81 GS 750L Bobbed

Hi all. I'm not new to the forum but I dumped my bike this past fall and am in the process of rebuilding. Figured I would add a thread to post progress.

So this was the bike when I first Purchased it. Bought it in Goshen IN in May of 12



So after owning it for a few months I picked up some new tires and some new bars. I loved it.




Rode it for up until October untill it was set down, putting both me and the bike out of commission. Removing the boken bits to do an inventory, check the frame ect.. Done all from a wheelchair..




And this is where it stands so far. Just got my tank repaird and painted ($80 ) and got some new bars(black). Painted front fender black. And also masked off the houseing of my headlight and painted that back. Side covers to be painted and put on yet. Seat needs to be reupholstered. The stator cover was also blown out, so I've replaced that(thanks witttom) and painted it black along with the small sprocket cover. (not pictured). I would eventually love to coat the whole engine black.




Hopefully I can get it back on the road soon. I'm itching! I'm liking the look of it so far. I think I still need to some painting to rid some of the chrome, not all.. but some.

like the full fender painted black, i been debating on putting my fender back on or not. i got two one painted and one chrome. i like the black so i got to paint this week i guess mine will go back on black as well. thanks like the bike. not many on here like a bobber as i have found.

Thanks man. I actually used Plasti-dip. I don't know if you've heard of it- but its pretty much like rubber paint that you can peel off later down the road, yet still lasts for years. Check it out online. Sounds perfect for you since you're not sure if you want it painted or not.

Progress Report

So I decided on ordering the Caswell tank epoxy sealer and I must say its really easy to work with and the results are very good. When i had the dent originally removed out of my tank, they had actually bent the tank so it did not fit correctly on my frame. With a rubber mallet I bent it back into shape but unfortunately I cracked the paint and actually broke the metal seam at the base of the tank. there was a small leak so when I let the Caswell dry, instead of letting the excess drain; I stood the tank up on end so it would seal the leak. Its got a good air tight seal now.





I used hot glue to prevent any of the epoxy from oozing out, I plan to apply some topical epoxy and try to cover it up as much as possble.



I also decided to heat wrap my pipes. I ordered the kit with two 15' rolls and the silicone paint. The wraps did not completely cover my pipes but I'm not to worried about it (don't hate!). II have yet to apply some liquid gasket on the fringes.

Its not a show bike and I'm just happy that the outside pipes are covered in full. If they begin to unwrap or look bad I plan on just redoing the inside pipes.. I mean its kinda a rat bike anyways





And this is how it sits after the few bits have been put back on. I'm really liking how it looks so far. I'm planning on getting my seat done next week, grips on the way, and mirrors are being watch on ebay as I type. After that Oil and gas and she is ready for summer!

How does it do with no rear fender? I debated on one up till I painted the frame don't want to weld and grind over fresh paint. But wanted to ask if you can tell say going through a wet spot in the road or even on dry pavement. Any unexpected hits in the back or head from dislodged road debris off your rear tire?

I have to say that I've never noticed anything from wet spots on the road although I've never ridden through any larger puddles. I've never felt any road debris either and I also live on a dirt road where sometimes I reach speeds up to 30-35. I can honestly say that I've never been hit on the back from a rock-that I've noticed anyway.

Do it! I get A LOT of compliments on the exposed back tire.

I've got a Metzeler in the rear ($150-$180) and I have a Shinko in the front and that was only about $60 if I remember correctly. Got them from Motorcycle-superstore.com

Nice congrats yourself! Glad to have a fellow bob on the site, they are few and far between on here!
