The secondary reduction gearset is inside the engine cases. What specifically are you referring to? Post a photo if possible.

Sounds like some one added it . Nothing from an original bike. Is the bike all original or is it someones dream bobber or something ? if it is the later maybe some one tried to adapt a electronic speed sensor for a different set of gauges

                I don't think so, George.

That sensor is mounted on the BACK side of the engine, at the shaft output. The gear position indicator is around the corner, on the SIDE of the engine. It is rather flat, not cylindrical like this one.

                Part #35 in this picture:

It is my guess that it is a sensor for an aftermarket speedometer. I am guessing that there was a magnet attached to the yoke of the u-joint and this sensor would 'see' it going by and compute the road speed. I have seen similar units mounted to the forks (or the rear frame) of a bicycle to sense a magnet that was attached to the spokes.

                  sensor

Yes I m beginning to think its after market , because my speed indicator as shown in the parts book photo is still in place, maybe it was faulty as the bike hasen't run since I bought It

Never seen anything like that before. It's not the gear indicator. And agree, looks aftermarket. Did the bike have a cruise control added by chance? Is there such thing as an aftermarket cruise control?

Good call, Ed, that is another possibility for that sensor.

Yes, there is an aftermarket cruise control. At least there used to be. I have installed a couple on two of my sisters' bikes and have another one at the house. Not sure, but might install it on "Junior" some time.
