Vin helpA friend bought a gs 850, he believes it's a 1982 and needs to get a bonded title. The number in the neck doesn't look like a vin. It's gs850-70208, what is this?Tags: None

 Definitely not a VIN.

Sounds more like an engine number, but that's not right, either.

If you can show a couple of pictures of it, we can probably give you the year, but you will have to come up with your own serial number.

Steve, read the other thread. That is what Suzuki VINs looked like before the standardized 17 number vins were required.

 Just looked at my 550, GS550E-39573Last edited by tkent02; 01-15-2014, 01:34 PM.

True enough, Tom, but by '82 they had the standardized 17-digit numbers.

That is why I asked for pictures, it might be a '79 or '80 850, not an '82.

Exactly, but it is a VIN, or it could be an engine number.Originally posted by Steve View PostTrue enough, Tom, but by '82 they had the standardized 17-digit numbers.

 .

To the OP, VIN and engine number do not ever match on the old Suzukis.

Post a pic of the VIN along with pics of the bike.
If its an early GS then the VIN should have one more digit.

If the frame VIN is actually GS850-700208 then its a 1980 GS850GLT.

The engine VIN will not match.
If its the original, the 1980 engine VIN would be after GS850-116520

Another possibility is that the "7" is actually a "1".
Frame VIN of GS850-100208 would make it a 1979 GS850GN
