Not my cup of tea but a mate has gone bobber mad and when I found this just sitting I thought I'ld see if by doing one he would get it out of his system.
is/was a 650 frame not a L told 550 motor tho I thought 550 had a kick start?

Depends on the year. All GSes 850cc and smaller had them through 1979.

Starting with the 1980 model year, they were all gone.
