1983 GS 1100e Minor Project

I was keeping my eye open for one of these bikes for quite some time. It's a three owner bike, with the first owner putting most of the miles on it. It has 17k miles and really doesn't need much..........

1) Stock pipes are en route, minus the heat shields if anyone has them.

2) Needs a new seat or a recover....anyone use the Pit Replica for this one?

3) Side cover tabs are broken....I think there is a tutorial for a fix somewhere. If anyone has beat up ones with good tabs I am interested.

4) Center stand.....I think Chef has one.

Then on to the maintenance. The bike runs awesome and the 32 year old brake lines stop this thing on a dime!

I know protocol says do the carbs. However, the previous owner did them in the spring and they seem to work well. So, I may not do them right away.

This is my first 16 valve adjustment so I will need to do my research and ask a few questions on procedure.

The anti - dive looks interesting. I know many bypass or modify it. I will most likely keep it original.

Stop Lamp light stays on at times, all lights seem to work.

It's really nice and clean. No rust to speak of, which I am not really accustomed to, so that's nice!

Unfortunately, I have a Honda on my lift so this one will have to wait a bit.

I would suggest riding for the remainder of your New England riding season.... for testing reasons of course. Im guessing that youre planning to return the carbs to stock jetting when the OE exaust is put on?

Why not sandblast and paint the exhaust. Is it too far gone?

Also you forgot to mention replacing chain and sprockets.

Exhaust seems solid, will need a good blasting and new coating. I prefer the original look and found a decent deal on a set of OEM pipes.

Hey Larry! I hope all is well with you.

The gauges, as well as most parts on this bike are still vibrant. It must have been garage kept most of it's life. Pretty cool bike......

Anyway here is how I fixed the broken tabs, works assume.

I have not checked the chain and sprockets as of yet. How many miles are on your set?

Nice work! I will need to find a donor cover as I don't have a good tab to work with. Must be a really bad design since the covers are perfect, with the exception of the tabs.

V & H is off the bike. Solid but looks ratty. Has the typical dent on the bottom of the header.

I put the bike on the lift and have started a little maintenance.

1) 4 into 1 pulled. Available if anyone wants it (Tichonchew?).

2) Tank, seat and side covers off. I ordered a Pit Replica seat cover which has arrived. However, after seeing a really nice custom seat on this site, I have decided to have a custom one done.

3) Air box, carbs and holders off. I thought these would be a little easier to get off and on compared to the 1000. I don't think so, same tight quarters.

Waiting on a few parts and looking forward to the valve clearance check, first time with a 16 valve. I ordered the valve tool to make things easy?!

I would like to paint the carbs OEM black after the rebuild. I haven't looked for a picture of a good example yet. Not sure every part was sprayed after or before assembly.

I noticed the air box has screw holes for chrome covers.....must be a box used on other models as I don't think I have seen one with chrome.

Refurbished the carbs over the weekend....Thank for a great tutorial, Ed! Carbs are all back together, just waiting for the proper size main jets to arrive.

I am going with new intake boots and will try to use the existing ones on the air box.

I am hoping the 1100 setup is a little easier to put back together than the 1000's. Not sure they will be as they were tight coming out.

The intake boots are angled, any tips on how to orientate them on the head, are there any markings?

I dont recall any markings... When I did mine, I attached them to the head, then rotated them until the carb sides were all parrallel with each other. I eyeballed it, but it could be easily checked with a straight also.

* note... pods on mine, so I don't know if the airbox will allow the boots to be installed on the head first and before carb installation. And yes, Eds notes were a great reference.
