GS1000 custom project - Resources?

I've built a lot of customs before, but few Suzukis. It seems that there are less aftermarket parts available, or at least they're well-kept secrets. I'm wondering what the members here can provide as far as leads to new parts.

It's a 1978 GS1000E and I'd like to find:

4-into-2 chrome Exhaust (cleaner looking than the stock stuff.)
1-size over Piston set

I'm also looking for used parts to complete the build. Right now, I can only think of the spoked GS750 wheels and compatible calipers. These should bolt right up to the spoked wheels and even have tapped holes for the second caliper up front.

This build is really hard to explain but once it's underway I'll let the pictures speak for theirselves. I just bought this GS and it's pretty rough. It's missing darn-near everything except the suspension and motor, but at least it rides around the block! That's the only reason I don't feel bad about customizing it. No use making good originals even harder to find.

The spoke front wheel from a '78/'79 GS1000 are drilled for a second disc.

Some one had the spoked wheels for sale not long ago

suspension and brake upgrades are a must, lots of options there

The Wiseco 1085 kit is less expensive than the +1 OEM kit

If I overbore to 1085, what sort of factors do I have to consider? I understand rejetting, but how involved is it on an overbore with the stock Mikuni slide carbs?

So has anybody tried this overbore? What's the butt-dyno difference?

I'm considering overboaring if there are any components out of spec. I have to tear the top off due to head and base gaskets leaking oil so I may as well mic everything and make sure the valves pass the leak test too.

Make sure you use Suzuki OEM gaskets, more expensive but worth it.

1085 gives a bit more torque, maybe a few HP. Many of us have done it

But, it's a gateway to much higher HP with a pipe, carbs and a cam

Well while I'm here I have one question. My friend has a GS650 he showed off once I started with my 1000 and that's when I noticed the gap in the axle holders on the forks. Is the gap supposed to be even on both sides? Is there a torquing sequence and how much torque?

Now there's the question of acquiring parts. Where can I get aftermarket exhaust (4-2 or crossover 4-2) for this model? Where will I look for compatible spoke wheels? I searched the for sale on this forum and nothing.

I think that MAC still sells a 4-2

The wire wheels, that will either take patience or lots of $$$$

You may need to run a tap down those holes, sometimes the 2nd set is not tapped to full depth. You can also fit the twin pot Kawasaki Tokico calipers and some CBR or Valkyrie rotors if you want some more "stop" to go with your more "Go...



My pipe is a Marving Race pipe. 4:1 but keeps the centrestand. Shocks are Works Street trackers with ARS and the fork is an 83 1100E with emulators, straight weight spring with adjustable preload & rebound damping (plus compression damping adjustment via the emulator).
