Finished: Basket Case Project 1980 GS1000, sorta

It's done, sweet lord it's finally done.

Sort of, still have shake down before I really get to take her back home.

Big thank you to Sean at MotoRelic for making it all happen, Wes at CounterBalanceCycles for the amazing reupholstered seat, and Danny at Knights Kustom for the awesome paint job!

It's not a purist restoration, and it's not a race replica. To be honest, there's not much left of the original GS1000 save for the frame, engine, carbs, side panels and rear cowl. But it's just as I envisioned and I enjoy riding the hell out of it. There's still a slight hesitation from 2-3K rpm and the Koso guage still needs to be sorted, but otherwise, it handles like a dream, rides like a bike 150 lbs lighter, stops on a dime, and sounds amazing to boot!

Fantastic!! amazing job. So many questions...I'll start with, what model Koso gauge is that? I didn't know they had one that will accept a mechanical tach cable. Really amazing job, congrats!

The gauge is the KOSO TNT-01 multifunction unit, not sure how MotoRelic made it work but there's still an issue with the tach signals above 42 mph. The quick filler is from RCD sold through Racefit. It is half conventional cap and half spring loaded for gravity dump can. Not sure if the front signals will melt, it's getting plenty of air flow and sits on the cooler core so there shouldn't be too much heat. I hope.

Never add up the cost of doing a nice build like that

I got got lucky as the basic bones of the bike I'm currently building cost less than $800 (with enough left for another bike too) ....... I don't want to think of the cost of the add ons

and that's about half of it - plus at least 100 hours of time so far ........ just keep telling yourself it's worth it and enjoy what eventually becomes your bike

I bought it post Brexit, so it didn't do as much damage to my wallet. My reasoning was that to source all the pieces stateside to make an enduro spec filler would cost me nearly as much in time and money, the added bonus to the RCD one is I can still easily fill it at the pump without the headache of a full on quick filler. That spring is wound tight!

I tried adding everything up earlier in the build and immediately regretted it. Ignorance is bliss...or at least less painful.

U.K./Europe can be very cost effective at the moment - I'm ordering some YSS shocks from the UK as it's over $100 cheaper - helps that the wife or I cross the pond about every 4 weeks with the luggage allowance of a king (200lbs each!)
