Rons' 78 GS1000 rebuild

Actually got it out of the garage today. Got the front brake caliper, side stand, handlebars, ignition switch and instrument cluster installed.

Of course, then it started to rain!

Making some very slow progress. Got the clutch lever polished and the perch painted. No pics right now. Hope to get a lot more done on Saturday once it gets warmer than 40 degrees in the garage!

You built the wheels? Impressive. I dabbled with a few bicycle wheels aeons ago. They came out decent and fairly true. A bit tedious for my then teenaged mind.

Got a little more done today. Got the front brake line installed, put the clutch and front brake perches on, got the rear brake pedal connected to the master cylinder, installed the rear brake switch, battery box, seat lock, front fender, front turn signals and started on the rear fender.

It got up to 52 degrees here today. Beats working in a freezing garage! Now if I can just figure out how to mount the pedals!

Yeah Glen, re-spoking wheels is a little tedious. There is a really good tutorial on here, I think it was done by Joe Nardy, that really makes it quite simple. I did not want to ride a bike with rusted spokes any longer!

Don't forget the engine will only mount from the brake pedal side.

Yeah, I know. The pedal is only on to bleed the brake. Going to start cleaning up the engine this week.

Cleaned up the connectors and re-wrapped the wiring harness today. Upon installation I could not remember if the harness goes over the cross member closest to the steering neck in the picture below, or under it? Cannot seen to find a drawing in the service manual or the Clymers that shows exactly how it is supposed to be ran. Anyone tell me for sure which way is correct?

Got it figured out! Had a friend take a picture of his, and it goes over the cross member. Of course, after I got his picture, I found one that I had taken during disassembly.

Finally got my frame back from the powder coater today. Looks better than I could have imagined. Now to get started putting it back together! Sorry cafe' guys, this ones going back as close to stock as possible!

And why yes, it is on the coffee table right now! He delivered it to my front door! Don't worry, it will be in the garage before dark!
