    gas tank switch

Hi all. I`m new to this forum but have a question that I hope you gents and girls can answer. I have a 1981 GS 1000L were I want to replace the fuel tank with a tank from GS 850G or 1000G. Are there any specific problems doing that or are there some other gas tanks that would be a better choise?

    Brg. Oskar

L tanks have different mounting points, so a G tank mounting will require some welding

Also note that even though the side cover only says “GS1000L”, it’s actually a “GS1000GL”.

May not sound like much of of a problem, but that G indicates that it is driven by a shaft, rather than a chain, which is a major difference.

Besides the difference in mounting points at the front, unless you change the entire fork assembly, the forks will dent the front of the G tank.

Thank you for that. What about the petcock and all that? Does that fit between 1000GL and the 1000G tank?

The reason for I`m asking is that I`m in Iceland and there are not many donor bikes here up not th. So every sparepart I have to get overseas.

Unfortunately, they are not the same. The petcock on the '80 was fortunately only used for one year. The bolt spacing is not the same.
