    Appropriate pricing for a 79gs1000e

So I'm thinking about upsizing to a larger GS as mine just doesn't do it for me, I have about 150psi compression and the bike runs smooth other than a bit of an issue low end, but to me it seems tired even though it has the right numbers to still want to pull well.

That being said, there's a 79GS1000e for sale, it's been in dry storage for about a year and the guy said it needs a new battery and fresh gas, in my opinion a carb rebuild is a must for any older bike that has been sitting that period of a time, especially one with 4 carbs.

The bike has 47k miles, it's not original as there's atleast an exhaust and fairing, but overall it looks pretty good, nothing immaculate but my 650 isn't either.

I'm wondering, what would be a fair price for a non running 79gs1000e, his number is up there a good bit in my opinion but then again it's a bit of a weird time for these bikes and I know the 79GS1000e is a more demanding model than most.

Just let me know as I really do need to get a bigger bike to satisfy my speed needs but I don't want to get a crotch rocket, it'll be an even bigger risk for my well-being.

Also if there's any questions I should ask let me know

from the chain side you can either see a gas or oil residue on the motor and also the rear wheel yo cansee surface rust on the sprocket and the chain might need a replacement

yes pristine ones fetch a good price this is far from pristine and that paint is probably hiding some dents and in humid fla rust and misery.

That's a "78" model tank, those are really rare & really hard to find & fetch pretty big dollars if in good shape.. If it is in good shape, shouldn't it fetch near $500?

thats something i was worried about, if he knows that the tank alone is worth that much IF the inside is as clean as the outside, but it definitely needs work all around besides the tank

Yeah considering the tank maybe more than $500 these days.... It does look as if the base gasket may be leaking on it (although it could be oil running down from a leak valve cover or head gasket...)

I paid 8 or 900 for my 79 about a year ago, I can't recall at the moment. It had some nice bits on it and turned out well. There's a Southern CA tax in effect here so I felt it was a good price.

Not being able to hear it run, see that it's charging, etc. makes it a potentially expensive crapshoot. Mine had 34K and had a fresh top end but I had no way of verifying that. I had to take the head off to get a mangled exhaust bolt out, and luckily he spoke the truth, inside was good. Also it wasn't charging but it was just the reg/rec and I had a spare from a GS1100E that worked fine replacing both units. And the wiring to the Dyna was wrong. As usual it adds up, I would say about as much invested in it as purchase price. Great bikes for sure, I love it.

I wouldn't go for that one. There are lots of better choices out there. (see https://www.thegsresources.com/_foru...-in-the-garage). If a GS1100E won't get you excited you need to see a shrink.

Well the thing is in looking more for a project as it saves me money on the budget I'm on, if I can knock this guy down to a realistic price I think I'll take it

That's definitely possible, but if I can get it for well under 1k and if it needed to be parted out because of cost issues it is worth the money in parts?
