Gauge lights

Does anyone know what kind of bulb goes in the gauges? I have a '78 GS550E and most of the lights that illuminate my gauges are burnt out. The bulb itself is spherical and the base is longer than the bulb and has a bayonet fitting with a single contact.

You can still get them from Suzuki. I remember trying to find them for my skunk, but just ended up getting them from the dealer.

09471-12001 is the part no.

They are 12V 3.4 Watt. Any auto supplier will have them. If they only have the 3 watt bulbs that's close enough. They are slightly dimmer but I find that better because I find the gauges a too bright at night anyway.

Thanks, but I meant what type are they, so I know what to look for at the auto parts place? For example, H4 for my headlight, 1157 for the turning signals, 194 for my car dash, etc.

I think I've got a package in the shop/barn. I'll go look in the morning but #51 or 52 comes to mind.

there should be a number stamped on the base of the bulb just like on the 1157 automotive bulbs. I just replaced the bulbs in my gauges but I just borrowed the bulbs out of my 73 Honda XL175.

OK here's what I found out. The bulbs I bought are a #53, they are 1/2 the wattage (1.7) of what comes stock. I found the stock instruments a little too bright at night, especially the hi-beam indicator, so I replaced all the bulbs with these except for the turn indicators, neutral and oil pressure light. These I wanted fairly bright for obvious reasons. A bulb #1891 is the proper wattage however it seems to have a longer glass bulb than what you might want. To get the proper 3.4 watt replacements you might have to go to a motorcycle shop. RenoBruce listed the part number above. Hope this helps.

3mm or 5mm should work as direct replacements as the bulb i measured was 4mm x 10mm

Forget the old bulbs and replace them with LED`s. They last longer and are more resistant to vibration.
