Removing shims

I lost track of the thread that was looking for this so here goes!

Stock unmodified shim tool (bottom) and the modified one:



Look closer to the trimmed tip that makes it easier to install:



Tool in use on stock camshaft (after-market cams have an irregular surface):



Pick tool used to turn the bucket and lift the shim.
Hemostat used to grab and remove shim:

Wish you had posted this about 5 hours earlier.

I just got done helping recycled64 with the valves on his third bike.

Would have been a good time to use this as a guide for practice.

Some day I'll get to see the process in person.

I'll be helping Vmass this weekend, maybe I'll get a chance to try it then.

great tutorial. I've got one of these tools but found it 'akward' to use compared to the zip tie method. So it doesn't look like you took too much off, I'll try to replicate it and try the tool again.

Can you give any more detailed pictures of how to trim the tip of the tool?

I don't understand why you would need to grind the tip of the shim tool to remove the shim.

I just insert the shim tool to free up the shim and bucket.

Use the tip of the hemostat to spin the bucket to the point where you see the cutout in the outer edge of the bucket

Then open up the hemostat and slide the lower lip of the hemostat into the cutout and under the shim and close the hemostat and squeeze hard and pull the shim out

This seems to works well for me.
