    Greasing Wheel Bearings

During the restoration of this old GS I eventually came to the wheel bearings. The bike only had 10K miles, the bearings felt good, no roughness or anything, but I could not believe the grease wasn't dried out after 25 years. Being sealed bearings you can't really tell. So I took a tiny drill and drilled a hole, carefully, through the dust seal on the side. Then using a "needle" grease gun adapter I injected them with wheel bearing grease. Upon reinstalation I installed them with the hole toward the center of the wheel so dirt could not enter. Further, some of the factory bearings, like the one in the sprocket housing were made with only one dust seal on the outside anyway, which is what kinda gave me the idea.
