Starter motor spins but doesn’t engage the engine

Hi guys. I went to take out my ‘83gs450l cafe bike today and suddenly it would not crank over, just heard the click of the solenoid when I hit the start button. Ultimately I got out the electrical meter and found that I had power to the starter motor however it would not crank over. I had this problem once before and all I had to do was tap on the starter motor and it would engage and start the bike so ultimately I did that again here and it did start the bike so I took the starter motor out cleaned it up like I did the last time put it back in the bike and now the starter motor spins but it will not engage the engine what is the problem it’s driving me crazy

If starter motor is spinning but eng. isn't, the starter clutch has got to be not grabbing the crankshaft. Odd it gave up just when the starter motor did... Don't tap on the starter too much, it has magnets glued to the inside of the case. Brake them loose and you're starter motor probably screwed.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.
