    1979 GS850 fork alignment questions

    Hello,

    It's been sometime since I've posted. Everything was going well until the end of June and this past July 4th that I've dropped my previously well cared for GS850. The first drop was not so bad as I was on it and I was able to slow the 850's decent. The most recent one was worse as I was attempting to get it on the center stand and lost control of it and it fell over on its own weight. Ouch.

    So I've noticed the handlebars are favoring the right side slightly when riding and also around 35 mph, there is a wobble. I'd like to try aligning the forks by working the suspension while various bolts are loosened. Things like the lower triple clamp, the calipers, fender, and axle nut are pretty straightforward. However there is the stem head center nut and the stem head center locking bolt.

    ​​​​​​The stem head center nut has the choke cable through its center. I imagine it is a yes but must I remove the choke cable before I can access the stem head center nut with a socket to loosen? And do I need to loosen the stem head center locking bolt as well to contribute to aligning the forks?

    Once I have the various lower bolts and nuts loosened, I understand that that I just need to work the suspension by pressing down onto the tank or something like that. I have recruited someone to hold the 850 upright but could I just use the center stand? I heard you'll get better results with both tires on the ground. And do I need to brace the front tire onto the a corner of the house or garage while doing this?

    -Do I need to remove the choke cable from the stem head center nut in order to loosen the nut?
    -Do I need to loosen the stem head center locking bolt as a part of aligning the forks.
    -Can I use the center stand for fork alignment?
    -Do I need to brace the front tire against something solid for the alignment process?

    The stem nut has nothing to do with your fork alignment. It could have perhaps been shocked loose but I doubt it.
    Use an open ended wrench to tighten is the easiest way.

    possible that you’ve bent the handlebar.

    Ensure the fork legs are the same height in the triple trees as a first step then release the lower bolts, bounce the suspension a few times, let it settle and then torque the bolts back up. That should be all you need to do…
