In the process of changing out a leaking fork seal, completely disassembled the right fork. At the top of the damper rod is a split ring (I believe it is the damper) that allows it to be fitted into the groove between the end of the rod and a flange about 1/4" - 1/2" from the top. I don't have any reason to think that the damper is worn, but how can I check this ? The forks cleaned up well, but the bike obviously sat outside for a while, because the snap ring and large washer were rusty, and you could tell there was water in the oil.

They generally don't wear to any appreciable extent - they run in oil after all. Just clean everything up and screw it back together with clean oil.
Multiple rinsing out of the fork leg plus running a brush down inside should be a priority too. -

Since everything is apart, I plan on flushing the fork lower, and the tube with brake cleaner. as it will get the crud out and dry quickly, and shouldn't hurt anything.1979 GS 1000Comment
