    Front wheel Shifted over?

    Hi All,

    I have a bit of a problem, and maybe som of you smart experienced okes can help?

    Bike is a 1981 GS850G
    Went out for a nice long ride and the Speedo packed up, So when I got home I had a look and found that the speedo drive at the front wheel was not turning.
    stripped it out and fixed it up , but when it came to putting everything back, I noticed that the right front fork ( as i sit on the bike) was being pulled in and asa result the caliper mounting bracket then pressed up againts the barake disk. I took everything off and check again and also noticed that the disc for the left fork ( as sitting on the bike) also seems very close to the inside of the left caliper bracket?

    dont know what I did wrong or what is wrong- I have taken off front wheel a few times in the past and never had an issue like this.

    If the forks had got bend from the ride then surely with the amount they are " off set" now I would have had a more serious problem?

    I have double checked all my axle spacers ect and they are in the correct order.

    It is like the front wheel is over by approx 5 mm?

              Unless your bearings moved which is pretty impossible you have a spacer in the wrong order somewhere....

                  took the bearings out - have not moved? cannot move?

                  my forks are straight?

                  spacers have not been mixed up.

                  this is what I cannot fathom- what the heck has gone wrong here?

                      there has to be a spacer missing somewhere. on the r/h side there are 2 spacers, a bearing spacer and an axle spacer. are they both there?
                      1978 GS1085.

                          One of your spacers is in the wrong way.I had this problem with my 750.

                              I had the same problem after a rebuild. I think it was Allie who put me right by suggesting loosening the whole front end and then tighten from the bottom up. 'Course this doesn't explain how your problem occurred.

                                  If you've taken the bearings out & replaced them then they could be not seated properly...

                                      Was the speedo drive damaged from an incorrect earlier fitting and has just recently failed due to this and now the spacings are all wrong?
                                      Allojohn/Allie method is the way.

                                          Hi,

                                          No speedo drive stopped working.

                                          I do have the spacing correct, I loosened the triple clamps and turned the stanchions to see if maybe they are bent. made no difference. tightened it all up a bit and bounced the front end and it came right!!!!!!!!!!!

                                          yes!!! but i did hear that maybe I may have a problem with the fork springs.

                                          still all this does not explain why it did this in the first place.
