I've got a '79 550E as well. From the research I've done, the '79 550 (non "E") came with spoke wheels. They're all over eBay for about $50 each. I'm planning to order some eventually.

Since the frames are identical, I don't see any reason that you shouldn't be able to swap them over. I haven't done much research on the topic yet, but that should get you started. Let me know what you find, because I'll be doing it eventually.

I figured the most that would be needed to make it fit might be axle spacers from the base GS550 (with wire wheels). Have you done the swap?
