Front wheel bearing cover

My 1978 only has a single front disc brake. On the other side of the wheel, there's a plastic cover over the axle and bearing. This piece doesn't seem broken, but it is hanging off and spins on the axle. How is this piece attached?

It seems to cap over the bearing, but there is only a single lip there, no threads. It has no holes for screws or bolts. Not sure the piece does anything but keep dirt out of the bearings, but it rattles and won't stay put.

Any ideas?

Checked the fiche. It shows the same part with three screws to attach it. Mine has no screws or holes for them. Weird.

There are supposed to be plastic snap in knobs on the innner side of that cover..that go into the predrilled rotor bolt holes that are under the plastic cover. The cover is just that..a cover to hide the holes on the unused side of the hub. look inside the holes on the hub and see if theres broke off knobbies in them

Heh. Since I'd have to pull the wheel to get into those tabs, electrical tape matches the black plastic nicely. Seems to secure the cap well also.

So I found this old thread about the front wheel bearing cover. I am trying to get this plastic cover off of my 78 GS550E front wheel but I don't want to break it. There's nothing in the manual about taking this off. Anyone do this before? If so, what is the procedure to get under the lip of the cover and pop these plastic snap in knobs?

Yes, that's what you do. The first time it's usually hard to get off. Figure out where holes are and try there so you're not flexing the plastic too much. Maybe use a scrapper to give you a larger area on the plastic and spray something like thin oil or WD40 in there just to moisten things up a bit while you remove it.

OK, I got the cover off. For anyone else in the future, I used a small paint scraper and a small screw driver. I used the small screw driver to get it started and open enough to fit the scraper underneath it. I then moved a little farther down the partially opened area and used the small screw driver to open it further. Also note, there is a small lip on the wheel rim, under the cover, that you have to get the screw over so that you can then pull up the screw driver and pop the cover off. Take your time and you won't damage the cover.
