GS850 caliper replacement

Hello all,

i need to replace my front right caliper of a GS850GT(1980). Unfortunatly SUZUKI has no more NOS and i cannot get some "usable" calipers.

Does anyone know if the calipers of the GSX1300 will fit on the GS850 ?
They do not look to different according to the fiches.

Second option would be to get some totally different calipers (i.e. BREMBO, TOKICO, NISSIN et al) and make an adapter. Has anyone done this on a GS850/1000 and which calipers would fit ? It looks like that for example TOKICO 4pot are bit to wide.

How about ebay? These things should be plentiful- of course, you will likely have to rebuild them. What's wrong with your caliper?

Look up Saltymonk's twin pot brake upgrade.
It's a lot better than stock GS brakes.

Well not very plentiful here in Europe though.
They are "worn" out so that they give a "klicking" noise. They are tilting along the vertical axis.
Available used ones are most likely in the same condition.

Best would be to replace them all with different (BREMBO and such) new ones. My wifes neck depends on them ..... so does mine ......

That's the same caliper as Saltymonk's setup, but he uses bigger discs so the braking would be better.

That caliper will fit width wise but will not work with the brackets I have.

Also I believe that caliper is offset differently, it won't allow you to use the stock top mount location on the fork & the bracket will need to be a more complex stepped bracket rather than a flat one.

Generally I recommend people use Honda CBR discs/rotors too (they handle modern pad compounds better, wet weather & are much lighter than the GS550 alternative that is showing in the link you posted (8trackmind - incidentally he now uses a set of my brackets which I sent him as a gift for doing the early research on this).

I have bracket / Spacer kits available if you want one. I also have a full kit of parts on the shelf at the moment that you could take if you wanted (postage may be an issue as the full kit is pretty heavy).

It fits but it is VERY close. You have to space the rotor out so that it almost touches the fork leg, (relying on the bolts for strength) make a custom mount and use a thin headed bolt with the nuts on the outside to bolt to the fork.

I have to look what kind of 2pot calipers i could put my hands on. In the moment only SV650 style is on the market ....

Edith talked to the MOT:

1) A floating disc provides a self centering effect when used with fixed pot calipers. Deformation under heat is not the prime reason for having floats.
2) Larger rotors are not acceptable because of the unproven fork stability.
3) (Extremly) larger break pads or piston diameters are not acceptible because of same reason as under 2)
4) Floating rotors got to go with fixed piston calipers. Fixed rotors shall go with floating calipers. No mixing up of float piston on float rotor or fixed piston on fixed rotor.

Result is that a 2pot (2x30mm piston diameter or similar) floating caliper is acceptible (original is a single 38mm piston). Piston area will be increased by about 23%. According to the MOT the master shall be increased by the same amount.

Material of brake pads is crucial and must be approven to work with the rotor. What i did understand so far is that i have to stay with "organic" pads.

If of interest i keep on posting news and further MOT obstacles.

You're in the UK? Where abouts I'll be there on Saturday (can probably bring brackets over if needed).

Sounds like you can use the Kawi Twinpots on a GS550 brake disk.

I'd also suggest your MOT man is talking out of his arse.... Lots of bikes come with sliding pin calipers & floating disks from the manufacturer.

Nicely put and dead on . But he's the one who needs to be convinced. No MOT, No fun. Well, dealing with the MOT is also no fun. Bureaucrats to say it in a gentle sort of way.

I told him that the SV650 for example uses a float-float arrangement but he insisted on the fork-brake-wheel as a system. So for the moment i'am stuck with a fixed disk and floating caliper.
