Given the price of the nice looking CNC blockoffs, I'd just as soon pay for the extra hydraulic lines to the brake calipers.

I have wondered, however, if the adjustable damping units of the GS550E would fit on the hydraulically-actuated units on the GS1100E (or the 700E in your case). That would do away with the brake-actuated nonsense, give dampening adjustment, and keep some cool looking do-thingys on the forks.
