    1979 GS1000S Brake Lines

My research shows that the brake lines used for this model are also used on the 80 S, as well as many other bikes.

The only exception seems to be the line between the front MC and the brake hose joint. Does anyone know why this line is unique to this year/model?

    Easy one. Handlebar height difference.

The S bikes have low handlebars, so the line from the master to the splitter is shorter than most other GS's. There is a difference between the SN and ST master cylinder, so maybe the hose end angles are different between these two parts?

Thanks...... I will pull the front upper line and measure the length and note the angles.

Apex will do all 4 lines for under a hundred bucks. A couple years ago I used the Goodrich line for the rear of another bike. Worked well but it was a very thin diameter line and looked a bit out of place. The Apex lines appear to have a similar diameter to OEM lines.

Raymond from Apex sent me the measurements he has on file for the 80'S.

All measurements match the ones on my 79'S.

Maybe the difference is simply a different bend in the upper fitting.

All front lines on the 79' have a straight fitting and a 35 degree fitting.

Apex lines are not the same OD as the original lines, they are thinner, at least on my 750E

Pretty difficult to find lines that match the OEM ones. I know the lower fronts are still available, but I will keep it simple for now and order everything from Apex.

I will be getting them in black, so the difference may not stand out as much as yours.

Thanks for the pics and heads up!

If you really wanted to get inventive you could use Earl's lines and place a rubber covering and the spring protector over the line. Not a perfect solution but it would look pretty good. If you bought the factory lower front lines you would only have to do this on two lines.

Thanks Ed, I actually did consider that.

I still think I will give Apex a shot.
