    Tires cracking on the sidewall Front Shinko 712

    Took a close look at the front tire on my 850 and it showing some sidewall cracking. Build date is 4511 and I think I put it on in April or May 2012. Has about 7,000 miles or so on but tread looks like I could get 2,000 more out of it easily. Is it typical to see these this type of cracking after only a couple of years?

    I helped another member work on his 850 this weekend and his front tire's sidewall (Metzeler Lazer) was cracked too. The tire is only a few years old. Showed it to him and suggested that some people on GSR would be upset by such cracking, but I wouldn't worry too much.

      Wow, Metzler's too, wonder what's up. I guess I'll check it in the spring again and see where it's at. Maybe I'll let some air out over the winter while it's not being ridden. Kind of surprised me though

        This was the last Dunlop D404 I had on the rear of my Intruder:



        It was only about 9 months on the bike in this pic (from new).

        I was surprised.
        Current:
        Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )

        Past:
        VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
        And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

          The condition of the tire is not dangerous for easy street riding, at least not for SW cracks. Sidewall rubber is on the tire to (1) protect the body ply tire cords (2) Stiffen the sidewall so that it flexes in particular ways (3) ease the transition between hard beadd, soft sidewall and flat tread that should be laterally rigid (4) Make a nicie area for name, model, DOT codes and so on. The cracks barely affect those characteristics at the present stage, when riding on the street at legal speeds, with proper air pressure in the tires. They do merit careful attention.

            There was a thread not so long ago where a member (Highwayglider? BonanzaDave?) figured it had to do with freezing during winter.

              Wow, I am a lazy bassturd. 2014, damn near two full years, I started this thread and I'm still riding that same 712. That front tire has close to 11,000 miles on it! I have 230 Tourmaster Front already bought, just have not got to swapping yet even though it is mounted on a rim and everything
