GS1100ES front master cylinder question. Piston stuck!

My buddy is doing a nice wholesale resto on a super clean ES we found last year and he is wisely re-doing the brakes. Been easy-peasey except for the front piston in the master cylinder. He got the snap ring out (took some expensive new NN pliers mind you) and the washer but the piston won't come out. Not jammed, it just moves a bit and clunks to a stop. Are we missing something? Suzuki shop manual does not indicate any reSon it should not freely pull out after clip and washer are removed. There's just that rubber seal left but that should not be holding up things.

Anyone? If no one has any answer I guess he'll build some some sort of tool or puller.

Can you soak it with brake cleaner?
