Fitting 4.5" GSX-R wheel to 1150

My bike is a little different as I used an offset bandit swinger. In all probability you will need a 3/8" offset counter sprocket and then with the rear wheel centered the chain will align . The rear sprocket side spacers will be different.

it would probably be easiest to do it by trial and error using shims/spacers to get the required alignment.

Chain (left) side you'll find will be like stock. It's the brake side that will need the modifying work, it's a tight fit in that arm but it will fit.

Will a 170/60-18 fit in the GS1150 swingarm?

If he wants the chain to split the difference between the wider Tire and the frame, then the chain has to move left of center which is why a.) the counter sprocket has to be offset and B.) the chain side spacer has to be shorter. I'm not sure why you would call that stock?


I did a scatter plot (of various reported installs) that I posted awhile back in one of JohnKat's threads that the 5.5" wheels need 5/8" offset and 4.5" wheels need 3/8" offsets for this very reason. The chain has to move left 1/4 the wheel width increase.

EDIT: OK depending upon what the existing wheel size is (3.0" or 3.5") the increase to 1.5/4=3/16" or 1/4" respectively which would probably be adjusted by shimming the counter sprocket and shaving the chain side spacer the same amount.

It will fit the 1100E swinger but the brake arm will have to be moved. That is what I run on on my ED. See above Venus says it is tight for the 1150.


The critical parameter is chain clearance (chain to frame and chain to tire) and you need to be using a 530 chain at least.

With my ED and 4.5" wheels that ends up being about 4.5mm each side.
Guys with 5.5" wheels is much less.

The swing arm width is generally not the problem. A 160-18 will be easier to fit.

You know that is a one year only sprocket carrier? Do you have axles, spacers and sprocket carrier?
