I swapped out a tube and it is amazing that the pinch bolts required minimal effort to break.

I've changed fork seals and found trans fluid in them before. I never looked, but do the bottles tell you what weight the ATF is? It seems that most bikes use 10 weight. -
nike calls for 15 sae so I had to x ref the atf I have its hovering at about 15 wt SAE at 40 c so it might be harsh. If too harsh ill just use the atf as a purge and swap to prefumy dyed up nice dedicated marketing hype\fork oil1983 GS 550 LD

The pinch bolts on the triple don't need to be very tight. The torque spec for my 1100E is only 15-25 N*m (11-18 ft-lb), which comes loose with light effort on a standard 3/8" ratchet.
ATF will work better than air, but not as well as actual fork oil. If you don't care about performance then it won't matter.

ATF...it's complicated and it's easier to buy real "fork oil" but looking up the ISO versus a "W" seems to give a clue.
EG: from http://www.matweb.com/search/datashe...a6ab70aedf74bc
.Hydroclear DEXRON III & MERCON Automatic Transmission Fluid is suited for a wide variety of industrial applications that call for an ISO 46 or SAE 20W hydraulic fluid. It qualifies as a Denison HF-O hydraulic fluid and has performed well in both Sunstrand and Vickers hydraulic pumps. Hydroclear DEXRON III & MERCON Automatic Transmission Fluid improves shifting characteristics at both high- and low-ambient temperatures. It resists thermal and oxidative degradation and offers outstanding low-temperature fluidity. It inhibits the formation of gum, sludge, lacquer and foam, protecting transmission from rust, corrosion and wear. It is dyed red for easy identification
The "ISO" probably depends on the type of ATF(from another page) a 32 ISO is about 10 W, a 68 ISO is 20WISO VG 32-46-68 viscosity
ATF is actually pretty good stuff as anyone with a car can attest to..it's kind of a dual purpose gear+Hydraulic application which a fork being a hydraulic application with heating due to motion.. As to heat, I can't see a problem versus a car's transmission but hey-there's an expert somewhere .... the curious bit is why a Honda I had and maybe my GSX400s (can't recall without looking it up) suggest a half an half mix with multigrade motor oil...Last edited by Gorminrider; 08-09-2018, 11:22 AM.Comment

hey guess what only swapped one fork and the other one in place has motor oil in it
oh and i only measured with a syringe no dipstick type gauge
oddly you can feel a performance improvement I know insane but its there 10w40
oil is harsh as hell1983 GS 550 LD

Well I finally swapped out the second fork. Same atf and no proper measurement but for a large bore syringe and 288 ml of atf. What a stunning difference. Im going to try and save up to 20 or so dollars for a litre of fork oil just to see if its a miracle. I also need to put air in the forks 4 psi I think. Should I get a bottle of nitrogen?1983 GS 550 LD
