The Ugly Gets A New Tire or They Don't Make Em Like They Used To

So I've had this tire on for I don't know how long. It just wouldn't wear out. I rode to S. Illinois last summer to see the eclipse and probably had it on back in 2016 when I rode the ugly to Vermont for the NE GS Rally. It finally started to show signs of baldness recently and I got sick of the slipping and sliding that was happening. I know, I know it was unsafe...

You should send that to the Smithsonian. What are you replacing it with?

Shinkos. 721 I think. They don't last real long but they seem to hold the road and handle rain well. Also cheap.

I haven't had any experience with other tires but for a beginner I will say the skinkos on my bike stick on the road like glue no matter how fast or sharp a curve I take hot cold or wet. Had a guy tell me to scuff them up before using them when new, is that a thing really? Being cheap too that's probably all I'll ever go with unless someone has some around the same price and quality that'll hold on dirt better lol.

Never heard of scuff them up. They do have a coating on them when new, like a wax, so it is a good idea to take it easy on a new tire before trying to scrape the pegs on a turn. I have found that waxy coating comes off very fast.

The whole idea of "taking it easy on a new tire" is only partly due to the mold release agent, and partly so you can get used to the feel of new tires with a properly-rounded profile.

If your tires have been flattened down the middle, you have to put a little more "oomph" into initiating a turn. If you do that with your new tires (that require very little input), your turn is going to have an interesting line.

The third photo: Am I reading the date code correctly? Yikes. 473? If so......made before 2000....as in 47th week of 93, or 83. Would have been good for a while yet if ridden on more twisty roads....center would have lasted longer...

I assumed 03 but since I lived through it figured I'd look it up sometime. when I went to see the eclipse I rode back through west Virginia and did a lot of twisties in the mountains. Also rode average about 85for about 800 miles of high way.

As an old guy I am not offended at all by chicken strip jokes. when I got up into the mountains of w Virginia it was around midnight and I rode the back roads for a couple hours to my camping spot. It was an awesome night.

Viewing the eclipse was one of the most amazing things I've ever done.

The Ugly gets POR15 treatment and a really cheap and kinda goofy paint job:
