1100ES front axle spacer

83' 1100ES. I'm putting the front back together and it doesn't make sense to me with the spacers. The manual specifically says that the 1100ES model does not have a lip on the outer spacer on the right side (#1) , it is supposed to have a straight shaft, which mine does.

can someone tell me what keeps the fork from bending inwards then. In my mind the lip needs to be there.

Quick other observation. The pic Rob attached looks to have an 82 and older wheel.

I get that the lower studs hold the forks in place once on and the the entire axle when properly put together keeps everything where it's supposed to be but when riding the bike at heavy tolerances I thought you would need that extra reassurance of the lip that nothing is moving, but I guess not. What's even more weird to me is that on a 1982 GS1100E (which is the identical front end and bike basically) it has a lip on that spacer but on the next years model, the 83' 1100ES, there is no lip and the Clymer manual actually indicates that. What happened??

My 82 GS1100E has the spacer with no lip. All original parts.

I got it wrong from the Haynes manual, "tubular spacer on EZ, ED, ESD, SZ, SD models", ha,ha..I'm not sure what models that leaves...
