180 rear tyre

So...
I am currently using the 180 tyre from the donor bike. 2014 front and 2015 rear date of manufacturer Dunlop Sportmax roadsmart 2.


I want to change them for grippier but still allround tyres.
Now my conundrum...normally using a swingarm made for a 180 tyre just use whatever, but I have machined down my rear sprocket carrier 3mm so my chain outer tyre rib clearance is marginal.
And it seems that not all 180 tyres are '180' wide.
So far I have measured, mounted on 5.5mm rims...
-Dunlop Sportmax roadsmart 2... 180mm
-Bridgestone Battlax BT023... 184mm.


My quest if you may is to measure 180 tyres and find (newer) tyres that (A) first fit in my setup and (B) are grippier/allround tyre.


Can my fellow forum members please measure their 180 tyre and please post your resuts.
I used a clamp (will post a picture) to measure from outer rib to rib.

You are going to have to give us a clue what this is going on. The pictures shown give us a clue that it IS a motorcycle, but virtually no GS will even let a 180 slide in, let alone mount it and go down the road.

Ok, important subject for me too, squeezing wide tires onto olde bikes.

Here's a Michelin RS180/70-17 on a GSXR 5.5" wheel. Measured width 183mm


Has a very rounded profile, wear after 5 track days:

I opted to go down to a 170 for clearance in stock 1100e swingarm with a 5.5 rim on my 1100es. Most of the 180 tires had just a bit too much profile to clear the chain with 5/8 offset sprocket and gs carrier. Also running 520 xring chain

pirelli's I've heard seem to be slightly narrower on the meat of the outside edge of the tire

I can confirm the measurement within 2 mm of the road 4, as that's what's on my bandit 1250. Great tire too.

Here's mine - Michelin Pilot Road 4 180/55 (500 miles on it and inflated to 36 PSI) = 6 7/8 inches wide (175mm)

I measured the BT023 at 184mm and they have it as 183mm so very similar.

I used to run a 170 on the 5.5 on my 750ES. Same reason.I used the Pilot Power.

Hi Steve, It is my 82 Kat I have a thread headed 'My Kat rebuild',
Using a 1250 bandit swingarm which normally would accomodate 180 tyres but I have cut 3mm off my rear sprocket carrier, this reduces the chain/tyre clearance.
