    Z1 vs 11E braking

    One disk better than three?

    Cycle World's test of the '82 11E 60 mph to 0...129 feet.

    First place I checked on line shows 126 feet for the '73 Kaw.

    How to explain this? If my Suzi 1100 was much heavier than my Kaw 900, but...

    CW's wet weight for Suzi was 549 lbs vs. 546 lbs (on line) for the Z1.

    CW's figures are real world, and we all know how optimistic manufacturers' claim's are (Kaw's owner's manual claimed my Z1 would do the 1/4 mile in 12.0 seconds!)

    Yet my 'seat' remembers that my Z stopped better. When I locked the rear (drum) brake, the rear wheel skidded in a very controllable manner. The GS bucks violently and even threw me off once.

    The only clue is the "race compound" Dunlop I had on the Kaw, which ran much too cold. So why will the rear of my 11EZ never skid?

      When I was young I had all the magazines and poured over them endlessly. At the end of the day the reviews were just opinions and a snap shot in time relative to performance. For example, a single disk will fade when it gets hot vs a dual disc but that won't show in the stopping distance numbers. Regarding the Z1, and all the big KZ's until the J model bikes came out, the frames are noodles compared to the GS frames. No comparison in terms of handling. Where the big Kawasaki's win out is in prestige. Suzuki copied the Z1 bike engine when they designed the GS family of bikes and for good reason. It's a true classic.

          I just can't figure out why my Z1 skidded the rear and my 11E bucks.

          The Suzi also does it when shutting off the throttle at redline in second or third. Makes me wish for a slipper clutch.

              The anti-dive was just a bad idea. Remove them, replace MC with a modern one, add stiffer springs and ceramic pads then install SS lines straight from MC to calipers. This will give you a significant improvement on braking. I bet the Salty Monk mod. is nice but I never tried it. Oh don't forget to connect the two ports at the bottom of the fork leg.
