A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Wheel Runout

I haven't hit anything with the wheel so I'll assume it's bearings and replace them first

    Wheel Runout

Hey there, I have a 1979 GS 550 with cast wheel. I got something approaching an MOT done the other day (as it no longer needs one), and the mechanic said there would have been an advisory for front wheel run out. Is this repairable?

    Continued Hard Starting Woes

Hey thanks all, I'm definitely was able to spray carb cleaner through those choke passages. If I have the carbs off again I'll double check I did some measuring of petrol and i think runnign dry seems like the main issue. Here are some weight's of petrol I was able to drain from the float...

    Continued Hard Starting Woes

Thanks guys. I did verify choke pickup passages were clear. Not sure exactly which passage you mean in the float bowl, but I remember there was a passage from the choke pick upp tube round into the float bowl and those were all clear. I was generally very methodical about checking everything was...

    Continued Hard Starting Woes

Hello everyone, I'm trying to chase down a hard starting problem with my bike. I've had this problem for years and never got to the bottom of it. I've recently rebuilt the carbs (for a 2nd time) using an ultra-sonic cleaner and the officially recommended o-rings. I replaced the cylinder boot...

    Broken carb fuel mixture tip

Hey thanks. I managed to get the bits of brass out of mine, but haven't yet determined if I buggered them irreparably. If you could hold these til the end of the week that'd be awesome

    Broken carb fuel mixture tip

Unfortunately the brass point of the mixture screw is still in place and the awl now has a preferential place to bed itself. I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to get it out

    Broken carb fuel mixture tip

Hey guys, I've had a go. I think i've got one out successfully but think I've completely screwed the other. The first one needed boiling for a little while, then a sharp tap on an awl with a hammer. The second time the awl must have been just behind the spot, and following a slightly over...

    VM Carbs rebuild question

I got them from a member here at GSResouces: Cycle O-rings. Seems like he has now ceased training, but when i ordered back in 2019 he sent me two sets and I've had this set ever since. Just looking around for more o-rings? Do GS550,750& 1000 use the same o-rings? An eBay listing I've found...

    VM Carbs rebuild question

Two further questions: 1) I was rebuilding the carbs and realised I was missing a pilot jet for carb 3. I initially thought I must of misplaced it, but was being very methodical (for me) incorporating egg boxes etc. Having done a thorough search of the area I had been working in and realising...

    Broken carb fuel mixture tip

Thanks. I'll give it a go. I had reinstalled the screws and orings. Should i take all the o-rings back out before boiling?

    Broken carb fuel mixture tip

Hey there, I've gone and done it (twice). I've found a few threads detailing what to do to remove the broken tip but the pictures have expired and words aren't my forte (hence being in this position) I can see the brass poking out into the main air passage, but trying to poke it backwards...

    VM Carbs rebuild question

Hey all, I'm trying to fix a long running hard starting problem with my GS 550 1979. A little background. I brought the bike with airpods and modified jets in, so I enlisted the help of a local bike mechanic to get the requisite stuff to take it back to stock (airbox and orignal sized jets)...

Twinpot Brake upgrade on 78 Skunk

Hey. I did this upgrade a while back and my brakes have seized up. Gonna do a caliper rebuild. Trouble is I can't remember what calipers (or rotors) I got from salty_monk Old PMs seem to have vanished from the system. Could anyone identify from the photo?
