A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

17 bolt hole valve covers a thing on GS550?

While shopping for a gasket I noticed some for sale with 17 bolt holes rather than 16. Is there a model year where they made a head with the extra bolt? I don't think I've ever seen one.

    Are these ok compression numbers?

In my case I find that if I add choke and crack the throttle for a split second while cranking it, it will start strong every time. It seems to like a little extra air in that starting crank. Probably to help with compression.

    Weak idle until hot

I just shoot for the lower edge of the bowl lip or where the screw fasteners come up against the bowl. This is about 5mm from the edge of the carb body. The manual says to measure while the bike is running but I that's a pain so I do it with the carbs off the bike. I did manage to get them about...

    Are these ok compression numbers?

1982 GS550LZ Cyl#1 135 Cyl#2 128 Cyl#3 130 Cyl#4 130 Cold and dry numbers. Bike has 60k miles but the head is a bit younger (maybe 40k) and the sleeves were replaced about 20k ago (did not hone or replace rings at that time). Bike runs fine but needs a little gulp of extra air with choke to...

    Weak idle until hot

Winter time means I get to do all the maintenance tasks I've been putting off. High on the list is a float level check. Cylinder #3 was running rich and the idle circuit screw would bottom out without the cylinder cutting out. Also #3 was not contributing very well. I put the carbs in my float...

    How to raise the needle?

I have a stock 82 550 and would like to try shimming the needles but I'm wondering how folks remove and reinstall them from the slides. How do you get the little c-clips off and on? Is there a special pliers you use?

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

I put the extra liner in the riding pants and will ride into town this morning around 730am. The forecast is for temps in the mid-20s. I'm planning on flipping the grip warmers on and hope they get hot before my pinkies start to hurt. I have big bulky thick gloves but I am looking at heated...

E10, Phase Separation, and Water in the Fuel Tank

I don't know who told me that condensation can form in the tank. especially if it holds mostly air and there's big temp swings when its sitting. It's probably a good idea to empty it out once every couple of years and let it dry out.

    Different handlebars

magna and daytonas have a similar flat/swept shape and a re generally considered comfortable bars I replaced the original buckhorns on the GS550L with daytonas about 15 years ago and saw a big improvement in comfort (less wrist strain) What are you trying to improve or change?

2025 World Series - Dodgers and Blue Jays

It was a great series with at least two classic games that will be talked about for many years. Loved the underdog story and cheered for the Blue Jays till the end. Both teams and cities should be proud and keep in mind that the rest of the fans could only wish their teams were still playing...

    Hello, Dolly!

It's that time of year where I'm thinking about putting the bike away for the winter and space is only getting tighter in my storage area. Has anyone used one of those roll on dollies with the casters? The Harbor Freight one seems reasonably priced and claims to be similar to the pricey ones...

I have one from a 1982 GS550L but I think it will fit.

2025 World Series - Dodgers and Blue Jays

I used to feel the same but they've made some changes in recent years which limits the play stoppages. There's a pitch clock, a limit on throws to first and a 3-batter rule on relief pitchers. Also extra innings play starts with a runner on second which has made those marathon games rare.
