DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS400 clutch rod seal and cam chain noise.

Got some time on my hands as the weather changes for the better and trying to get a few lingering projects knocked off the list for my bike. First off is a leaky clutch rod seal. Apparently a pretty common issue and a nice cheap part but I'm having trouble figuring out whether the seal...

    1978 400C losing power at 80mph

Got just about everything dialed in on this bike after a long road of work. I've been taking it out on longer rides and giving it more beans on the back roads and so far everything seems mostly good. The one thing I've noticed is the bike seems to get super gutless at about 80mph, almost like...

Gas tank venting issues [1978 GS400C]

Where does the gas tank vent on the 400C? There doesn't seem to be any holes in the cap and ever since I added a second layer of Redkote I'm having ventilation issues. I'm guessing the tank vents somewhere else and I've sealed it up with the tank liner. I assume the easiest solution would be...

LED woes never end! [1978 GS400]

The entire ignition system has been replaced. I'm running Dynatek coils and wires and caps.

Gs550 1979 led blinkers flash erratically

hey man just wanted to let you know this solved my problems as well! i was having erratic flashing with led signals and my lights strips were cutting out even after swapping out the relay and doing a diode mod and an SH775 swap. I swapped my plugs out for resistor plugs and it all cleared up...

LED woes never end! [1978 GS400]

Well you'll never believe it, but I solved it! And it was all thanks to a thread here. There's a guy who was having hyperflash on his signals and solved it by switching to resistor plugs. Well, I checked my bike and sure enough I was running B8ES plugs. Went and snatched a couple BR8ES from...

LED woes never end! [1978 GS400]

Yeah I'm in a bit of a rough spot because I'm not sure where the issue lies and the only way to really pin it down is to play whack a mole. I know the relay works fine with the stock signals as I had them hooked up to test the electrical system when I was building the bike. I'm starting to...

LED woes never end! [1978 GS400]

I'd love to go back to the stock signals, I still have them. The problem is the PO shaved off all the brackets on the rear end (signals, side covers, seat, helmet lock) when he modified the rear end for a cafe seat. I haven't figured out a good way to mount them without access to a welder. I...

LED woes never end! [1978 GS400]

Long time no post. I've been busy with a move and getting all the finer bits right with the bike, but I've hit a wall with the lights. I am having two separate problems that may or may not be related. First, I cannot get my signals to stop blinking erratically. I have stock front signals and...

    Clearcoat removal question

Just want to toss out a recommendation. Aircraft brand remover is insanely good. I've seen it rip 3 layers of clear, 3 layers of color, and 3 layers of primer all in one go. Spread it on, let it sit, wipe it off. Funny side note, it is often listed as simply "Aircraft Remover". Don't get...

    Base and head gaskets

This is the head gasket design I got with my pack. Has metal rings around the cylinders and has built-in red o-rings on the corners. I'll have to take a look when I get home and see what brand is stamped on my gasket sets I have two and one was definitely better quality.

    Base and head gaskets

Oof. That's about how much a paid for a whole gasket set that came with base gasket, head gasket, orings, camchain tunnel gasket, and gasket for all the covers. Haven't had an issue with them yet aside from them being very easy to rip (I hate cardboard gaskets). Guess time will tell.

Tracking down a knock on a '78 GS400. Need help getting the cylinder off.

I use videos so people can see what I'm looking at/manipulating. I know it's easier for me to diagnose things I when I can see them, plus I'm very likely to use a wrong word or describe something poorly being so new to bikes so a video gives people more information. I'll admit I was a bit all...

Tracking down a knock on a '78 GS400. Need help getting the cylinder off.

Update: Success! Archimedes once said "Give me a lever long enough, and a fulcrum in which to place it, and I will move the world." Well I don't know about that, but I know a 3 foot pry bar can crack open a 40 year old cylinder! I did have one concern that may or may not be anything at...

You guys helped me get gunning, now just need to fix this stutter at 4K RPM!

Hey sweet we have the same bike! Have you done all the obvious stuff? Timing, spark plugs, check for air/vac leaks? I see from your old post the carbs are freshly cleaned but have you checked the jets recently? It takes very little to clog them so even if the rest of the carb is spotless you...
