DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    GS500 Starter Motor into '82 GS450E?

I had a chat with my friend Gemini this morning and I suspect I'm flat outta luck on that swap... looks like the GS500s use a 10 tooth pinion whereas the GS300/450 that share the same starter use a 9 tooth pinion. Glad I checked!

    GS500 Starter Motor into '82 GS450E?

Cheers Steve! Given the bottom ends are swap-in/swap-out (aside from the reversed gearbox) I reckon it's a pretty safe bet one will fit but I just like to double check. Mind you finding one seems to be the challenge at the moment! It wasn't long ago GS500 parts were everywhere, now they're...

    Pic of the week game

Cool! I'm a bit sporadic logging in but I shall endeavour to do so! Just to have to get the timezone right!

    Pic of the week game

While I'm tempted to go for Gustov's Harley, I'm totally biased and can never skip a Katana, so Carter gets my vote.

    GS500 Starter Motor into '82 GS450E?

It's a bit hard to tell from the Suzuki parts fiches but certain parts of the starter motor are interchangeable between my '82 GS450E and at least the earlier model GS500s. I strongly suspect my starter really needs replacing. I've changed bushes and cleaned up the commutator over the years but...

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

I find mine reasonably comfortable. The 1000s had different carbs, built to race! They came with VM32 mechanical slide carbs vs. the BS34 CVs on the 1100s.

    What's up with tires?

I've been running BT45s and now BT46s on the Katana since I built it in 2019 and haven't looked back. They handle well, stick well, and the rear is dual compound meaning it lasts reasonably well also. The only reason I don't run them on the 450 is because they don't make them skinny enough! I...

Do you still own a GS?

Still riding my '82 GS450 to work every day, and the '84 Katana gets ridden once a week or more, sometimes to work as well.

Glad you pulled it when you did Glen, that could've been disastrous!

    1982 GS450 - No Spark

I revisited the timing last weekend with the bike on the side stand rather than centre stand which let me see a lot clearer without having to kneel down in an awkward position and it was definitely too retarded. I didn't have to advance it too much at all to get it lined up nicely at full...

    1982 GS450 - No Spark

I was able to get the replacement for the Dyna Style ignition in time for last weekend, so it's in now and I've been commuting on it every day this week again. Yay! I did have an issue with timing where it seemed I needed to fully retard the plate and modules when following the Dyna static...

    1982 GS450 - No Spark

Well as my run of luck seems to go at the moment, I got the new Dyna Style ignition yesterday, swapped them over to the Dynatek plate, and no spark from the left module. Checked with a multimeter and it gets a dead short to ground. The right module works just fine and dandy. I'll give him a call...

    Rear disc rotor 1980 GS850G

Cool, I get all my brake gear from them and some sprockets/chains as well. I haven't had to get a rotor swap done like that myself but have had good results with everything else. I've been running their discs and pads on the 450 and pads on the Kat for years (it still has original discs).

    I'm back

Ah there's another familiar name from last time! Cheers, glad to be back and yep neither bikes are going anywhere any time soon (except wherever I ride them of course ).

    Rear disc rotor 1980 GS850G

Have you tried Metalgear at all? The same situation exists for the Katanas and I'm pretty sure they offer a service to swap the internal part to a new rotor. Not sure if they only do that for their own rotors or not but might be worth a try? This is their 850G listing.
